(ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.) – The Wilson women's lacrosse team ended the season for the second time in three seasons in the United East Championship final on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, it ended in similar fashion as St. Mary's reigned supreme and defended their United East title. The Seahawks now advance to the AMCC / United East Crossover Championship where they will take on Alfred State for an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship tournament.
The Basics
Score: No. 2 Wilson 2, No. 1 St. Mary's 24
Venue: JLR Stadium
Records: Wilson 8-10, St. Mary's 6-10
How It Happened
- The Seahawks wasted little time in taking control of the game and scored the first eight goals with a 7-0 lead after one. Special teams played a role in the opening frame as the defending champs scored three player-up goals, two of which were in the final five minutes.
- Wilson eventually got on the scoreboard five minutes into the second quarter as Sadie Fike (Jr., McClure, Pa. / Mifflin County) scored her 35th goal of the season on an assist from Alaina Marek (Jr., Bealeton, Va. / Liberty). Marek went on to score herself later in the period as she picked up a ground ball on a failed clear by St. Mary's and went in uncontested for the score. The rest of the game belonged to St. Mary's as Wilson was held scoreless for the second half.
Inside The Numbers
- This was Wilson's fourth championship game appearance in the past six seasons. Two appearances were in CSAC title games.
- The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak for the Phoenix, the longest in program history.
- Marek's helper gives her 20 on the year and 30 points for the season.
