Phoenix Split with Ravens

ROSEMONT, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team hit the road for a CSAC doubleheader at Rosemont College. The Phoenix (9-8-1, 3-1 CSAC) split the games with the Ravens (7-12, 3-1 CSAC) by taking game one 4-1 and dropping the nightcap 12-2 in 5 innings.

How It Happened Game 1: The Phoenix jumped on the board in the top of the first as junior Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) led of with a double. After graduate student Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) bunted Wenger to third, junior Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West) brought her home with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Hits in the second and third inning for the Phoenix didn't produce any runs. Meanwhile, graduate student Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) allowed only one hit through the first five innings as the Phoenix continued to lead 1-0. In the bottom of the sixth, the Ravens took advantage of a Phoenix miscue and scored a run on a double steal to knot the game at 1-1. The Phoenix threatened to take the lead in the seventh as sophomore Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School) led off with a double. Later in the inning, freshman Ashley Stevens (Valencia, CA, Valencia) reached on fielder's choice and stole second. With runners on second and third with one out, the Phoenix couldn't advance the runners. Following a walk to Wenger to load the bases, the Ravens induced a ground out to get out of the inning as the Phoenix left the bases loaded. The Ravens put the winning run in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh with one out and had runners on the corners with two outs, but Potter ended the threat with a strikeout as the teams headed to extra innings. In the eighth, the Phoenix plated three runs as doubles by graduate student Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) and Stevens drove home the winning runs as the Phoenix claimed the 4-1 victory.

Inside the Box Score Game 1: Butterfield paced the offense with 3 hits while Wenger, Stevens, and graduate student Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) each added 2 hits. Potter picked up her 6th win of the season after allowing just 1 run while striking out 13 in 8 innings of work.

How It Happened Game 2: The nightcap got started similar to the opener as the Phoenix grabbed the early 1-0 lead. A single by Bradley got things going with two outs. Carty would tally an RBI single later in the inning that scored Bradley. Six hits for the Ravens in the bottom of the first would lead to three runs as the hosts took the lead. Although the Phoenix loaded the bases in the second, they couldn't push across a run and continued to trail 3-1. With two outs in the bottom of the second, the Ravens recorded three consecutive hits, the last of which was a three-run homerun to push their lead to 6-1. The Phoenix tried to respond in the top of the third as Carty doubled and moved Roth to third. Roth would score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Hannah Lyons (Dover, DE, Dover) to make it 6-2. However, the Phoenix would get no closer as the Ravens tacked on two more runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to win the game 12-2 in five innings.

Inside the Box Score Game 2: Wenger and Carty had 2 hits each to lead the Phoenix. Butterfield took the loss in the circle for the Phoenix.
