CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team made their home debut this afternoon as they opened up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) against the Eagles of Saint Elizabeth University earlier this afternoon. The Phoenix (8-7-1, 2-0 CSAC) swept the Eagles (3-5, 0-2 CSAC) by a score of 2-1 in an extra-inning affair for game one, and then 7-2 in the second game.
Game One: Graduate-student
Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) got the start on the bump for Wilson in game one, retiring the first two innings in order. The Phoenix got the bats going early and often, but could not cross the plate as both teams went into extra innings tied at zero. In the top of the eighth inning, Saint Elizabeth tallied the first run of the game off an error that pushed them in front, 1-0. Later, in the bottom of the eight, Wilson went right to work as junior
Alecia Hamilton (Canton, OH., Glenoak) advanced to third off a wild pitch followed by a bunt and steal from graduate-student
Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon). Then, with runners on second and third, junior
Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) ended the game with a walk-off double that drove in two runs, giving Wilson the 2-1 extra-innings victory.
Inside the Box Score: Wenger ended the first game going 3-4 with a double, stolen base, and two RBIs. Sophomore
Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School) went 2-3, while graduate-student
Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) hit 1-3 with a double.
Potter threw for all eight innings in the circle, tallying 18 strikeouts while only surrendering one unearned run. When all things were said and done, the Phoenix tallied two runs on seven hits with one error, while their opponents finished with one run on four hits with one error.
Game Two: The Eagles came out firing in the second game, scoring two runs in the top of the first, including a solo shot, that put the in front 2-0. But, in the bottom of the first, Wilson responded right back with two runs of their own. The first run came off an RBI single through the right side off the bat of junior
Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West), while the other run came off a triple from graduate-student
Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) that left both teams knotted up at 2-2.
Butterfield started on the mound for the Phoenix in game two, retiring the top of the second and third in order, keeping things even at two. Later on, in the top of the third, Wilson added three more runs off three hits. The first run came off an RBI single from
Bradley, followed by an RBI double from
Barker.
Carty scored the last run of the inning with a monster home run to center field that pushed the score to 5-2. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Phoenix added two more runs, off hits from
Bradley and
Barker that extended the Wilson lead to 7-2 as they walked away with the win in game two.
Inside the Box Score: Bradley and
Barker both finished game two going a perfect 3-3, adding two and three RBIs, respectively, and a double each.
Carty went 2-3 with two RBIs, a triple, and a homer.
Butterfield threw a complete game, striking out five batters in the process. The Phoenix added seven runs on 11 hits with one error, while holding their opponent to two runs, five hits, and no errors.
Up Next: The softball team will travel to Rosemont College, where they will face the Ravens in a CSAC showdown on Wednesday, March 30, at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
