Softball Splits With Red Devils

CARLISLE, Pa.- The Wilson College softball team hit the road to Dickinson College for a non-conference doubleheader. The Phoenix (6-7-1, 0-0 CSAC) split the day with the Red Devils (4-9) after dropping the first game 4-5 and coming back to win the second game 5-4.

Game One: Super senior Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) started on the mound for the Phoenix and would start the first inning with three quick outs. Dickinson would start their scoring in the bottom of the second inning after an error for Wilson.  Wilson responded with two runs of their own at the top of the fourth off a passed ball and an RBI to give the Phoenix a 2-1 lead. Dickinson answered at the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at two. Junior Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West) hit a double in the top of the fifth inning allowing graduate student Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon)  to cross home plate and regain the lead. The Red Devils responded with another run in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game tied.  The game remained tied pushing into extra innings with the score at 3-3. Wilson started with junior Alecia Hamilton (Canton, OH., Glenoak) on second and successfully got her home off a sacrifice fly from graduate student Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) to give the Phoenix a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth. The Red Devils were able to score two runs, with one off of a triple which was immediately followed by an RBI single to end the game with a final score of 5-4.

Inside the Box Score: Sophomore Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School), Bradley, Roth, and Hamilton would all earn runs for the Phoenix. Potter ended the day with six strikeouts against 30 batters while allowing 10 hits and three earned runs.

Game Two: Wilson started the scoring in the second game with their first runs coming in the top of the second inning. Barker started the scoring after capitalizing on a wild pitch by the Red Devils and Bradley reached home after Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) was walked with bases loaded to bring the score to 2-0. Dickinson was quick to regain the lead and earned four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-2 lead over the Phoenix. The scoring would stall for both teams until the top of the seventh inning when Wilson would break the stalemate. Fifth-year Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) earned an RBI with a single to center field which allowed Wenger to score for the Phoenix cutting the Red Devil lead to two. Later in the inning, Bradley hit a double to left field bringing home Roth and freshman Karah Stiffler (McConnellsburg, PA, McConnellsburg) to give Wilson a 5-4 lead over Dickinson. The Phoenix defense held strong to close out the game on top.
