CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team looked to continue their five-game winning streak as they played host to the visiting Highlanders of Cairn University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match earlier this evening. The Phoenix (6-7, 4-2 CSAC) were defeated by the Highlanders (9-4, 6-0 CSAC) by a score of three sets to none with set scores of 25-13, 25-11, and 25-20 in an exciting third set.
How It Happened: Cairn started the first set on a 9-2 run before Wilson started to get things going with a kill from senior
Andrew Hetzer (Chambersburg, PA., Cumberland Valley Christian), followed by a block from senior
Shae Cardenas (Torrance, CA., West Los Angeles CC) and freshman
Jackson Cordell (Waynesboro, PA, Waynesboro Area Senior H.S.). Later on in the set,
Cordell came up with a kill and sophomore
Ian Ruiz (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, Colegio y Noviciado Santa Maria del Camino) notched an ace to cut the deficit to six points. The Phoenix continued to fight but dropped the first set by a score of 25-13. In the second set, both teams started off trading points until the Highlanders jumped on a 13-3 run that put them in front 18-7. Near the end of the set junior
Noah Wickenheiser (Cresco, PA, Notre Dame) added a kill, but Cairn went on to take this set, 25-11. Wilson started the third set on a commanding 8-3 run. Adding points during the run were
Hetzer, who added a kill and an ace, and
Cardenas, who came up with a kill. The Highlanders then took to a 15-2 run that put them in front, 18-10. The Phoenix, however, didn't go down without a fight, they answered back with a 9-1 run that flipped the scoreboard and put them on top, 19-18. Despite the valiant effort, Wilson dropped the final set by a score of 25-20.
Inside the Box Score: Hetzer added one ace, three blocks, four kills, five digs, and six assists in the match.
Cardenas led the team with seven digs while coming up with two kills, and one block, while
Cordell also finished with two kills.
Ruiz served up a team-high four aces while senior
Eric Holz (Williamsport, PA., Loyalsock Township) also added one. The Phoenix added 12 kills on 61 attempts against 27 errors, while their opponent tallied 27 kills on 63 attempts against 15 errors.
