CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team traveled to Lancaster, Pennsylvania for a tri-match against the Chargers of Lancaster Bible and the Eagles of Saint Elizabeth, earlier this morning. The Phoenix fought hard but were defeated in both matches, by scores of 3-0.
Match One: The Chargers jumped on an 8-0 run before Wilson ended the streak with a kill from senior
Shae Cardenas (Torrance, CA., West Los Angeles CC), set up by senior
Andrew Hetzer (Chambersburg, PA., Cumberland Valley Christian). Shortly after, the Phoenix added another point off a block from
Hetzer and
Cardenas that cut the deficit to 9-3. Lancaster Bible then rifled off seven-straight points that pushed their lead to 17-4 as they took the first set by a final score of 25-5. In the second set, the Chargers jumped out to a 13-2 lead before
Cardenas came up with another kill. Later on in the set, senior
Eric Holz (Williamsport, PA., Loyalsock Township) notched a kill set up by
Hetzer cutting the difference to 15-4. Wilson continued to fight but dropped the second set, 25-7. Starting off the final set, Lancaster Bible started with seven unanswered points before
Cardenas ended the run with a kill. Moments later,
Holz added the next kill that brought the score to 10-2. The Phoenix dropped this set by a score of 25-6, giving the Chargers the 3-0 match victory.
Inside the Box Score: Cardenas paced the offense with three kills, while
Holz and freshman
Jackson Cordell (Waynesboro, PA, Waynesboro Area Senior H.S.) added two and one, respectively.
Hetzer added six assists, while junior
Noah Wickenheiser (Cresco, PA, Notre Dame) came up with three digs. Wilson added six kills on 50 attempts against 19 errors, while their opponent came up with 30 kills on 48 attempts and six errors.
Match Two: In the second match, Saint Elizabeth jumped out to a 13-4 lead, early on. Scoring points for the Phoenix were
Hetzer and
Cardenas who both notched kills. The Eagles went on to take the first set by a score of 25-9. In the second set, after Saint Elizabeth took a 6-1 lead,
Holz notched two straight kills, both set by
Hetzer, that cut the difference to 6-3. Shortly after,
Cordell came up with another kill for the Phoenix that cut the lead to 8-5. Later in the set, Wilson started to gain some momentum and cut the deficit to 14-12, sparking the run was a kill and ace from
Hetzer. The Phoenix continued to roll but dropped this close-set by a final score of 25-20. In the final set of the day,
Holz and
Cordell tallied the first two kills as The Eagles took a 9-4 lead. Later on in the set,
Cardenas added a kill but Saint Elizabeth took the final set by a score of 25-10.
Inside the Box Score: Hetzer led the offense with four kills, while
Cardenas and
Holz both added three.
Hetzer also went on to add two blocks, while sophomore
Saria Alshaikhali (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Hayfield High School) notched one and nine digs. Wilson came up with 14 kills on 68 attempts against 20 errors, while their opponents added 37 kills on 80 attempts against ten errors.
