Phoenix Leap Over Lions

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team faced off against Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponent the Bryn Athyn Lions. The Phoenix (6-6,4-1 CSAC) had a clean sweep over the Lions (0-6,0-5 CSAC) with set scores of 25-12, 25-16, and 25-20. Prior to today's game, the men's volleyball team honored their seniors: Shae Cardenas (Torrance, CA., West Los Angeles CC), Andrew Hetzer (Chambersburg, PA., Cumberland Valley Christian), Eric Holz (Williamsport, PA., Loyalsock Township), and Connor Martin (Warner Robins, GA., Houston County).

How it Happened: The first set between the Lions and the Phoenix went back and forth before Cardenas would start a six-point run for Wilson. Saria Alshaikhali (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Hayfield High School) helped keep Cardenas continue serving with two kills in the run to build the lead to 10-5. Kills and service aces helped the Phoenix earn a victory in the first set and secure a 25-12 win. In the second set, a four-point run was spurred on from the start with serves by Martin and kills from Holz and CardenasLater on, in the second set, Hetzer had the serve and earned four service aces to bring the score to 21-11. A kill from Martin would close out the set with a final score of 25-16. Martin would start the scoring for the Phoenix after earning a kill and then a service ace. Bryn Athyn and Wilson went back and forth until the Phoenix were able to earn a four-point run again thanks to a kill from Hetzer and another service ace from Martin to bring the score to 12-8. The Lions would attempt to claw their way back into the game but junior Ian Ruiz (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, Colegio y Noviciado Santa Maria del Camino) earned two service aces in a five-point run to give Wilson a 23-18 point lead. Cardenas would end the game with a kill to give the Phoenix a clean sweep over the Lions. 

Inside the Box Score: Senior Andrew Hetzer led the team with five aces while Connor Martin followed with four aces. Senior Shae Cardenas and sophomore Saria Alshaikhali (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Hayfield High School) each had 10 kills on the day. 

Up Next: The Phoenix will take on CSAC opponent Cairn University (8-4, 6-0 CSAC) at home on Thursday, March 24, at 7:00 p.m.
