Softball Battles Squirrels in Season Openers

STAUNTON, Va. - The Wilson College softball team opened the 2022 season this afternoon on the road at Mary Baldwin University. The Phoenix (0-1-1) dropped the opener 7-6 in extra innings and the nightcap ended in a 3-3 tie as darkness ended the game after five innings. 

How It Happened Game 1: The Phoenix got ont he scoreboard first as sophomore Haiden Brookens (Fayetteville, PA, Chambersburg Magnet) singled and moved to second after a walk by junior Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg). Senior Delaney Glazer (Rochester, WA., Rochester) followed with a single to right, but Brookens was cut down at the plate. A double by junior Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West) brought home the first run of the season as Wenger scored to make it 1-0. Neither team threatened to score over the next four innings as both pitchers were in control. In the fifth inning, the Phoenix added to their lead as graduate student Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) singled, stole second and later crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Wenger for a 2-0 edge. Graduate student Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) was cruising along in the circle only allowing 2 hits through the first five innings, however the Squirrels (1-4-1) broke through in the sixth with a triple and a homerun to tie the score at 2-2. After a quiet seventh inning for both squads, the Phoenix got a 3-run shot from Barker to take a commanding 5-2 lead, however the Squirrels answered with 3 runs on 4 hits in the bottom of the eighth to force another inning at 5-5. Glazer put the Phoenix back on top in the ninth with an RBI single, but the Phoenix would strand two runners on base. In the bottom of the ninth, the Squirrels pushed two runs across, with the final run coming on a sacrifice fly to claim the 7-6 victory in game one.

Inside the Box Score Game 1: Glazer, Barker, and Brookens each tallied 2 hits. Barker accounted for 4 RBI, while Glazer and Wenger recorded one each. Potter went the distance in the circle allowing 7 runs (5 earned) while striking out 7 and walking 2.

How It Happened Game 2: The Phoenix again scored the first run of the game as Wenger led off with a single, stole second and scored on a squeeze off the bat of junior Kaesey Greene (Taneytown, MD, Francis Scott Key) for the 1-0 lead. During the second inning, the Phoenix would push two more runs across as back-to-back doubles by senior Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal) and Wenger drove in runs to make it 3-0 in favor of the guests. In the bottom of the third, the Squirrels got on the board after getting a hit and taking advantage of a Phoenix miscue to pull within 3-2. Back-to-back extra base hits for the Squirrels in the bottom of the fourth knotted things up at 3-3. After a scoreless top of the fifth for the Phoenix, the Squirrels threatened with a pair of hits in the bottom half, but couldn't push anything across. Tha game was called due to darkness after the fifth inning and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

Inside the Box Score Game 2: Wenger paced the offense with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate with a stolen base,1 run scored and 2 RBI. Greene accounted for an RBI. Glazer threw all 5 innings in the circle allowing 3 runs (2 earned) while striking out 3 and walking 1.
