NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Wilson College softball team opened up their spring break trip with a pair of games against the Chargers of Lancaster Bible and the Mavericks of Medaille College. The Phoenix split their games this morning, winning the first game against the Chargers 19-0, but dropping the second game to the Mavericks, 5-4.
Game One: Super senior
Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) started on the mound for Wilson in the first game, striking out two in the top of the first inning. In the bottom half, the Phoenix bats going early and often. Junior
Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) slapped a double to left field and then later scored on a wild pitch. Shortly after, sophomore
Haiden Brookens (Fayetteville, PA, Chambersburg Magnet) scored on another wild pitch that made it 2-0 early on. Then, junior
Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West) slapped in the first RBI of the inning, followed by graduate student
Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim), who knocked in two more RBIs. Both freshman
Rosemarie Weidenhoft (Glen Burnie, MD, Glen Burnie) and sophomore
Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School) added RBIs, before senior
Delaney Glazer (Rochester, WA., Rochester) drove in the last run later in the inning. When all the dust had settled after the bottom of the first, Wilson was out in front, 10-0.
Potter shut down the Lancaster Bible offense, only allowing one hit in four innings of work; all while striking out seven batters. The Phoenix went on to win by a final score of 19-0.
Inside The Box Score: Wenger and
Glazer both finished going a perfect 2-2.
Wenger added four runs, two walks, a double, and an RBI, while
Glazer added two RBIs, one run, and one walk.
Brookens added two hits on three plate approaches, tallying two RBIs, two runs, and a walk.
Carty finished game one going 1-2 with two RBIs, two walks, and three runs.
Potter earned her first win of the early season, while Junior
Marina Monsalve (Corona, CA., Centennial) threw for one inning, striking out two and not allowing a hit. Altogether nine batters added RBIs as the Phoenix finished with 19 runs on 11 hits with no errors while allowing zero runs and one hit.
Game Two: Monsalve got the nod on the bump for Wilson in game two, retiring the side for the first two innings. In the top of the third, Medaille drove in two runs that pushed them in front. Later on, in the top of the fourth, the Mavericks added three more runs to bring the score to 5-0 after four innings of play. The Phoenix defense stepped things up for the next three innings, shutting down the Medaille offense and limiting the damage, allowing zero more runs. In the bottom of the sixth, Wilson got the bats going, scoring three runs. Senior
Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal) knocked in the first run off a single to center field. Shortly after, junior
Alecia Hamilton (Canton, OH., Glenoak) knocked in another followed by freshman
Ashley Stevens (Valencia, CA, Valencia) who drove in the final run of the inning, bringing the score to 5-3. In the bottom of the seventh,
Kosheba slapped a single to center for an RBI that brought the score to 5-4. Despite the effort, the Phoenix could not complete the comeback, dropping this one by a final score of 5-4.
Inside the Box Score: Kosheba and
Barker went 2-4, while
Kosheba added two RBIs and a run,
Barker added a double.
Hamilton finished 1-4 with an RBI and
Stevens went 1-3 with an RBI. Three different pitchers threw for Wilson, combining for six strikeouts. The Phoenix added four runs on ten hits with three errors, while their opponent added five runs on seven hits with three errors.
Up Next: The softball team will play another doubleheader tomorrow morning against Mansfield and Franciscan at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
