Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Phoenix Sweep Tri-Match

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team hit the road today for a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) tri-match versus host Rosemont College and Pratt University. The Phoenix (5-6, 5-2 CSAC) grabbed a victory over the Ravens (3-9, 3-2 CSAC) by a final score of 3-2 (25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 24-26, 15-10) and defeated the Cannoneers (0-8, 0-2) 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-19).

How It Happened Match 1: The Phoenix looked to avenge an early season loss to the Ravens and came out hot as senior Shae Cardenas (Torrance, CA., ) tallied a pair of kills followed by a kill by classmate Eric Holz (Williamsport, PA., Loyalsock Township) to give the team an early lead. Later in the set, the Phoenix rattled off five out of six points highlighted by a service ace by senior Andrew Hetzer (Chambersburg, PA., Cumberland Valley Christian) and another kill by Cardenas. With the set tied at 22, the Phoenix scored the final three points to win 25-22. The second set saw the Phoenix record 5 kills, with freshman Jackson Cordell (Waynesboro, PA, Waynesboro Area Senior H.S.) accounting for three of them as the team rallied for five of the last seven points to win 25-22. After dropping the third and fourth sets by a tight margin, the Phoenix took control of the fifth and final set by jumping out to a 4-1 lead that featured a service ace by senior Connor Martin (Warner Robins, GA., Houston County). A rally by the Ravens tied things at 4-4, but a couple of miscues and a kill by Holz put the visitors back up 7-4. With the set tied at 8-8, sophomore Saria Alshaikhali (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Hayfield High School) scored three of the next six points with kills assisted by Holz for a commanding 13-8 advantage. The Phoenix would close out the set and the match with an emphatic kill by Hetzer to claim the victory.

Inside the Box Score Match 1: Cardenas led the Phoenix with a 9 kill effort while Alshaikhali added 6 kills and 3 aces. Junior Noah Wickenheiser (Cresco, PA, Notre Dame) had a match high 12 digs and Hetzer had a match high 25 assists. The Phoenix held a .074 to .055 advantage in attacking percentage over the Ravens.

How It Happened Match 2: Having just defeated the Cannoneers on Thursday night, the Phoenix were well prepared to fend off Pratt again this afternoon. As was the case on Thursday, the Phoenix used long scoring runs to control the match. Trailing 4-3 early on, the Phoenix scored six straight points that featured kills by Cordell and Alshaikhali to put the team up 9-4. Later in the set, the Phoenix scored five in a row, this time with kills by Martin and Holz to lead 19-10. Another kill by Cordell closed out the set 25-14. In set 2 the Phoenix were tested as the Cannoneers led 18-16, but a pair of errors and an ace by Hetzer put the Phoenix up 19-18. With the set tied at 22, kills by Cordell and Alshaikhali sealed the 25-22 victory. Again in set 3 the Phoenix trailed early, this time 6-5. Kills by Holz and Martin as well as a pair of aces by Holz moved the team ahead 10-6. Later in the set, kills by Cardenas and Martin extended the lead to 18-12. Cordell would again close out the set and this time the match with a kill for the 25-19 set win and 3-0 match victory.
