Phoenix Beaten By Beacons, Victorious Over Wildcats

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.-  The Wilson College softball team played their final games of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Break Classic tournament in Myrtle Beach today against UMass Boston and SUNY Poly.  The Phoenix (5-6-1,0-0 CSAC) would split the days' results after falling to the Beacons with a score of 1-0 and notching a win over the Wildcats with a final score of 4-1.

Game One: The Phoenix started the first game of the day with sophomore Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School) on the mound and the defense started the game going three up three down to close out the first inning. This game quickly became a pitcher's battle with each pitcher facing only three batters in the second inning. The Beacon batters were the first to get the offense earning two hits and one run to give UMass Boston the lead. Graduate student Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) tried to answer in the top of the fourth inning hitting a double out to center field but would be left on base as the inning came to a close. Wilson would earn three more hits over the next three at-bats but were unable to cross the plate leaving the games final score at 1-0 in favor of the Beacons.

Inside the Box Score: Graduate student Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) led the Wilson offense with two hits on three at-bats. The Phoenix earned eight hits after 24 attempts at the plate and zero errors. The Beacons would end the game with one run, four hits, and no errors on 22 at-bats.

Game Two:  Wilson started game two with three strikeouts from super senior Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown). The Phoenix offense wasted no time getting points on the board in game two. Senior Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal) notched the first points for Wilson after hitting a double to left-center, then stealing third, and being brought home off a single from junior Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West). Potter went three innings without giving up a hit before allowing one in the top of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning, an RBI from junior Kaesey Greene (Taneytown, MD, Francis Scott Key) and two RBI's off a sacrifice bunt from junior Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg), Wilson would extend their lead to 4-0. SUNY Poly found their first score and only score of the game at the top of the seventh inning but it was not enough to catch the Phoenix.

Inside the Box Score: Kosheba, Butterfield, Bradley, and Greene all crossed home for the Phoenix in game two. Wenger led the team with two RBIs, followed by Greene and Barker with one apiece. Potter would earn her fourth win of the season improving to 4-1 with 11 strikeouts against 25 batters. Wilson finished the game with four runs, four hits, and no errors; while SUNY Poly would end the game with one run, four hits, and one error.

Up Next: The Phoenix will be on the road for a doubleheader against Dickinson College on Thursday, March 24 at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
