Softball Splits on Day Two of Spring Break Trip

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Wilson College softball team took on day two of spring break trip with two games against the Mansfield University Mountaineers and the Franciscan College Barons. The Phoenix dropped their first game of the morning against Mansfield University 4-3 after battling nine innings and would come back to win the second game 11-0. 

Game One: Wilson started with sophomore Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School) on the mound and the defense would hold strong for the first three innings keeping the game scoreless. Moving into the bottom of the fourth inning, Wilson would drop two runs and would hold the Mountaineers for the next two innings keeping the score 2-0. At the top of the sixth inning junior Kaesey Greene (Taneytown, MD, Francis Scott Key)  would hit an RBI to allow junior Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) to cross home plate and bring the score to 2-1 at the end of the inning.  At the top of the seventh, Wilson would tie the game at two after junior Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West) would be hit home from graduate student Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) to force an international extra innings scenario. At the start of extra innings, Greene would secure another RBI two give the Phoenix the lead 3-2.  Mansfield would tie the game at three during the bottom of the eighth inning off a Wilson wild pitch. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Mansfield scored the winning run after a passed ball from Wilson to bring the game to a close with a final score of 4-3. 

Inside the Box Score: Greene would lead the team in RBIs after having one hit and two RBIs in the game. BarkerWenger, and Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) all reached home for the Phoenix in game one of day. Butterfield ended the game allowing eight hits, four runs, and three strikeouts throughout the nine innings pitched. The Phoenix earned three runs, on four hits, and no errors while the Mountaineers earned four runs, on eight hits, and two errors.

Game Two: Wilson came ready to play for their second game of the day against Franciscan College. In the first inning Wilson earned three runs off three RBIs to start the game on top 3-0. The Phoenix defense led by super senior Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) would keep the Barons allowing only one hit and no score after two innings. Starting the third inning, graduate student Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim)  hit a triple out to right field which allowed Barker to pass home and bring the score to 4-0. After three more RBIs in the inning the Phoenix would hold a 7-0 lead moving into the bottom of the third. After a quick three strike outs from PotterWilson was back on offense and earn four runs on three hits to put the score to its final 11-0. 

Inside the Box Score: Potter earned her second win of the season after only allowing three hits and eight strikeouts after five innings. Barker, Carty, Bradley, and Ashley Stevens (Valencia, CA, Valencia) each scored two runs for the Phoenix while Roth, Butterfield, and Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal) all tallied one run.  Wilson earned 11 runs on 15 hits and no errors while the Barons had no runs on three hits and one error. 

Up Next: The Phoenix will play another doubleheader against Albright College and the University of Saint Joseph  tomorrow, Wednesday March 16 at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
