Phoenix Topple Lions, Fall to Blue Jays

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC. -  The Wilson College softball team battled the rain and their opponents on day 3 of the Faspitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Phoenix claimed an 11-3 victory in 6 innings over Albright College in the opening game of the day and fell 4-1 in game 2 versus Saint Joseph.

How It Happened Game 1: Three straight two out hits in the top of the second inning put the Lions (0-5) on top of the Phoenix (3-3-1) 2-0. In the bottom half, the Phoenix responded with 3 runs highlighted by a 2-RBI single by sophomore Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School). A single to right-center field by junior Kaesey Greene (Taneytown, MD, Francis Scott Key) put the Phoenix on top 3-2. An unearned run came across for the Lions in the top of the third to knot the score at 3-3. In the fourth inning, the Phoenix connected on 4 hits and took advantage of a Lions error to bring home 3 more runs. Senior Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal) and junior Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West) each drove in runs for the Phoenix in the inning. Graduate student Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) entered the circle in the top of the fifth inning and proceeded to strike out the side. The Phoenix blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth as junior Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) cleared the bases with a double to center field that scored Greene, freshman Ashley Stevens (Valencia, CA, Valencia), and Butterfield to make it 9-6. Later in the inning, Wenger would score on a ball off of the bat of graduate student Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon). The Phoenix would end the game in the bottom of the sixth via the NCAA eight-run rule. Barker led off with a double followed by a single from graduate student Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim). Fifth year senior Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) stroked a double to left field to drive in Barker for the walk-off win.

Inside the Box Score Game 1: Barker led the Phoenix with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with an RBI. Roth, Carty, Bradley, Buterfield, Stevens, and Greene all tallied 2 hits each. Junior Makenna Snodgrass (Flagstaff, AZ., Flagstaff) picked up her first win of the season after going 5 innings and allowing 2 earned runs with 4 strikeouts.

How It Happened Game 2: Wenger got the offense going for the Phoenix in the first inning as she led off with a single and stole second base. She moved to third base on a wild pitch and came home on an RBI single by Barker for a 1-0 lead. Butterfield started off strong in the circle as she sat down 10 of the first 12 batters she faced. However, in the fourth inning with two outs and one runner on, the Phoenix defense committed two errors that allowed the Blue Jays (5-2) to load the bases. A bases clearing double followed and the Blue Jays took 3-1 lead. The Phoenix put two runners on base in both the fifth and sixth innings, but couldn't drive them home as the Blue Jays closed out the game with a 4-1 victory.

Inside the Box Score Game 2: Barker went 1-for-3 with the lone RBI. Wenger, Kosheba, Stevens, and sophomore Haley Privett (Fayetteville, PA, Chambersburg Magnet) each collected a hit. Butterfield took the loss in the circle despite allowing only 1 earned run in 5 innings of work.
