Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Wilson College women's lacrosse team hit the road this afternoon for their first contest of the season. The Phoenix (0-1, 0-0 CSAC) faced off against non-conference opponent Lancaster Bible College (1-0, 0-0 United East) and dropped the season opener 15-7.

How It Happened: Freshman Sage Lague (Fairplay, MD, Goretti) netted her first goal of the game and career just 45 seconds into the first quarter, giving the Phoenix a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Lancaster Bible scored to tie the game with 11:30 remaining in the quarter. The Chargers' lead would grow as they earn another goal putting them ahead by two, but freshman Hope Sanders (Hanover, PA, New Oxford HS) responded with a goal of her own to cut the lead to 3-2 with 3:30 left to play. Moving into the second quarter, it was Lancaster Bible with the hot sticks. Early in the second quarter, the Chargers had back-to-back goals to expand their lead to 6-2 as play continued.  Sophomore Anna Gibson (Cecil County, MD, Perryville HS) answered with two goals of her own within a minute of each other to chip at the Chargers lead. Junior Paige Reynolds (Keedysville, MD, Boonsboro High School) continued to work at the lead off the assist from sophomore Kayla McHugh (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin HS). Wilson would finish the second quarter down 7-5 going into the half. As time continued in the third quarter, so did the Lancaster Bible College lead, as they scored five unanswered to bring the screen to 12-5. Lague earns her second of the day with forty seconds remaining in the third quarter. Five minutes into the fourth quarter, Gibson added another goal too, which the Chargers responded with another back-to-back goal situation with a third coming with two minutes remaining to close out the game with a final score of 15-7.

Inside the Box Score: Gibson earned the first hat trick of the season for the Phoenix with three goals. Lague followed with a brace earning the second-most goals for the team with two. Sophomore Delaney Fulfer (Greencastle, PA, Greencastle HS) had 10 saves.

Up Next:  The next game for the Phoenix will be their home opener, Wednesday, March 2 at 4:00 p.m. against Eastern Mennonite University ( 0-7, 0-7 ODAC).
