Men's Volleyball Drops Two On The Road

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team traveled to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, for a tri-match against the Mighty Macs of Immaculata and the Colonels of Wilkes, earlier this afternoon.  Despite a valiant effort, the Phoenix (0-4, 0-1 CSAC) were defeated in both matches by scores of three sets to none.

Match One: Wilson took on Immaculata (5-9, 0-2 CVC) in a non-conference tilt in the first match of the day. The Phoenix dropped this one by a score of three sets to none, with set scores of 25-12, 25-6, and 25-9. In the first set, both teams were neck and neck but the Mighty Macs started a 6-0 run that gave them an 8-2 lead. After Wilson regained their composure, Immaculata started another run. The Phoenix started a late run but could not complete the comeback as they fell in set number one, 25-12. In the second set, the Mighty Macs started a run early that gave them a 9-0 lead as they took the second set by a score of 25-6. Wilson put together several strings of points in the final set but, could not overcome a late run as they fell in this set, 25-9. 

Inside the Box Score:  Senior Shae Cardenas (Torrance, CA., West Los Angeles CC) helped pace the offense, tallying a total of six kills while coming up with a team-high ten digs.  Senior Andrew Hetzer (Chambersburg, PA., Cumberland Valley Christian) dished out seven assists in the match, also adding five digs and two kills. Junior Noah Wickenheiser (Cresco, PA, Notre Dame) notched two digs and two assists, sophomore Ian Ruiz (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, Colegio y Noviciado Santa Maria del Camino) saved five digs, and freshman Jackson Cordell (Waynesboro, PA, Waynesboro Area Senior H.S.) and senior Connor Martin (Warner Robins, GA., Houston County) each added one block. The Phoenix finished with 11 kills on 66 attempts against 18 errors while their opponent finished with 25 kills on 74 attempts against eight errors. Wilson added a total of 31 digs and nine assists in the opening match. 

Match two: In the second match of today's tri-match, the Phoenix faced off against the Colonels of Wilkes University (8-9, 0-2 MAC)  in another nonconference showdown. Wilson scored points early and often but the Colonels took the first set by a score of 25-13. The second set started with an 8-0 run from Wilkes as the early deficit proved to me too much to overcome as Wilson fell in the second set, 25-9. In the final set, with the Phoenix down three points, the Colonels started another run that pushed them in front, 12-4. Wilson hung tough but dropped the final set by a score of 25-8.

Inside the Box Score:  Cardenas paced the offense again with a team-best four kills on his way to adding three digs. Hetzer tallied his first ace of the season while leading the team with eight assists and adding three digs. Ruiz added a team-high four digs while Wickenheiser collected three digs and one kill. Four others went on to add one kill. Wilson added ten kills on 60 attempts against 21 errors in the match. The team also tallied eight assists and 19 digs. 

Up Next: The Phoenix will host the Cannoneers of Pratt Institute (0-6, 0-2 CSAC) in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) tilt on Friday, February 25, at 7 p.m.
