CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson College men's soccer team kicked off against the Lions of Bryn Athyn College. The Lions may have scored first but the Phoenix were quick to respond and finished the game on top with a final score of 4-2.
How It Happened: The first half of the game was a very balanced effort from both sides but with the lions having a slight advantage in shots with seven compared to the five from Wilson.
Billy Merk (Macungie, PA, Lehigh Carbon Community College) had two saves in the first half to keep the game notched at zero moving into the second half. At the start of the second half, the Lions were awarded a penalty kick, which was saved by
Billy Merk. Bryn Athyn capitalized off the rebound of the save and took a hold of the lead bringing the score to 1-0. The Phoenix were quick to respond with
Aidan Diem (Baltimore, MD, Archbishop Curley High School) scoring off the restart to tie the game at one apiece. Seven minutes later,
Martin Souza (Manassas Park, VA, Manassas Park High School) was able to finish his shot off a pass from
Aidan Diem. A minute later,
Dylan Youmans (Westminster, MD, South Carroll High School) extended the Phoenix lead to 3-1. The scoring didn't stop there as
Dylan Youmans earned his second goal of the game, this time off a pass from
Martin Souza giving Wilson a 4-1 lead with 20 minutes remaining. Things were heavy defensively for the Phoenix over the next 20 minutes. In the 89th minute, the Lions managed to find their second goal to bring the score to its final of 4-2.
Inside the Box Score: Despite Bryn Athyn leading in shots, Wilson was able to capitalize on their shots as they finished with four goals.
Billy Merk finished the game with three saves across 90 minutes.
Dylan Youmans ended the game with three shots and two goals while
Aidan Diem and Martin Souza each finished one goal and one assist.
Up Next: This concludes the 2022 season for the Wilson College men's soccer team as they finished sixth in the conference with a record of 2-4-1 in CSAC play and 2-10-4 overall.
