Phoenix Burn Falcons in Overtime

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey hit the road to take on Cedar Crest College in a non-conference tilt. The Phoenix used a late goal in regulation to send the match to overtime, where junior Miranda Long (Catawissa, Pa. , Southern Columbia ) hit the winner in a 2-1 victory.

Cedar Crest (3-4) took the lead just over halfway through the first half on a goal by McKenna Hunt. The Falcons defense was solid in the opening session, limiting the Phoenix (4-3) to just two shots by Long. 

The second half started with Long firing another shot, but the Falcons goalkeeper, Emma Ryan, was able to get the save. The Falcons tried to widen their lead early in the second half by taking aim on Phoenix junior goalkeeper Kayla Butts (Pasadena, Md. , Chesapeake ), however Butts was able to stop a pair of shots and keep the Phoenix within one goal of the lead. 

The Phoenix defense played strong the remainder of regulation giving the offense a chance and with just over ten minutes remaining, Long struck the equalizer and sent the game to overtime tied at 1-1.

Each team took a penalty corner in the extra session without success, but the Phoenix would break through in the 79th minute when Long took a pass across the front of the goal from sophomore Lauren Moss (Bloomsburg, Pa. , Central Columbia ) and rattled the back of the cage ending the game with a 2-1 Phoenix victory.

For the match the Phoenix held a 9-5 shots advantage, however the Falcons had a 5-3 edge in penalty corners. 

Long continued to stay hot as she scored her sixth goal in the last five matches. Moss had an assist for the second straight match and leads the team with four on the season.

Wilson return to action this Saturday as the team visits Wells College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference showdown.
