Phoenix Deny Owls

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team hosted Bryn Mawr College in the Wilson College Field Hockey Invitational today. The Phoenix earned their first win of the season by defeating the Owls 2-1.

Sophomore Lydia Garfinkle (Arendtsville, Pa. , Biglerville ) put the Phoenix (1-1) on the board less than seven minutes into the game as she took a feed from sophomore Payton Dziemburski (Rising Sun, Md. , Rising Sun ) and buried it in the right corner of the cage to put the hosts up 1-0. The Owls (0-4) kept the pressure on midway through the first half. After staving off a pair of penalty corners and a shot that went wide by the Owls, the Phoenix defense finally gave up a goal when the Owls Mary Cuigini knocked in a shot that rebounded off of junior goalkeeper Emily Sullivan (Elverson, Pa. , Twin Valley ). The Phoenix dominated possession the remainder off the half but couldn't take advantage of three penalty corners and four shots that sailed wide or were saved by the Owls as the teams headed to the break knotted at 1-1.

During the opening minutes of the second half, the Phoenix unleashed several shots at the Owls defense and grabbed the lead just over five minutes in when junior Miranda Long (Catawissa, Pa. , Southern Columbia ) ripped a shot into the left corner of the cage to give the Phoenix a 2-1 edge. A valiant effort by the defense and eight second half saves by junior goalkeeper Kayla Butts (Pasadena, Md. , Chesapeake ), who entered the game after the half, preserved the 2-1 victory for the Phoenix.

For the match the Phoenix held a 17-12 edge in shots, while the Owls held a 10-9 advantage in penalty corners.

Wilson will be back on the field on Thursday as the team travels to Notre Dame of Maryland University to play the contest that was postponed earlier in the season.
