Simmons, McGlinchey Help Women's Soccer Surge By Crusaders

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Persistance paid off on Monday afternoon as Wilson used a late push to come back and defeat Christendom in non-conference action. After the Crusaders scored midway through the second half, the Phoenix pulled even with an Ashlynn Simmons (FY, Gerrardstown, W.Va. / Musselman) goal in the 75th minute before Shaylee McGlinchey (FY, New Market, Md. / Oakdale) came through in the clinch with a brace on goals in the 79th and 83rd minutes.

How It Happened
  • Although the Crusaders had an early shot on goal saved by Bella Scarlato (So., Severn, Md. / Glen Burnie), the majority of the action saw Wilson on the attack in the first half. Unfortunately for the Phoenix, eagerness was an Achille's heel as they were called for offsides seven times in the frame. Despite that they were still able to outshoot the Crusaders 9-4 with McGlinchey giving Wilson its best chances with a saved shot and another ricocheting off the crossbar. It resulted in a 0-0 score at the break.
  • Teams exchanged shots at the beginning of the second before Christendom started to make a push. Madison Ebersole (Jr., Big Pool, Md. / Clear Springs) was able to make three saves in a five minute span as the final third started, but the Crusaders became the first to light up the scoreboard as Theresa Luckey found a loose ball shortly after a corner kick in the box. Ebersole was able to get both hands on it, but the shot had so much force that it was pinned between her hands and the net just beyond the right post.
  • At that time the Wilson offense came together and quickly pulled even just nine minutes later. Caden Edmunds (FY, Etters, Pa. / Red Land) set up the play by feeding Karen Cutler (Sr., Camp Hill, Pa. / Camp Hill) up the right side. After Cutler controlled possession and cut in to the left, she found Simmons streaking toward the net and she was able to fire it in between the goalie and the near post.
  • From there McGlinchey took control. As the Crusader backline was attempting to switch ends of the field, McGlinchey intercepted a pass, went in untouched, and crossed the keeper from left to right for the go-ahead goal in the 79th minute. Four minutes later she wrestled possession away from the Crusaders and launched a shot from 25 yards out. It hit the wood work again, but this the angle resulted in it bouncing down and touching down just past the end line for the final goal.

  • Simmons now has four goals and 11 points in the past two games.
  • McGlinchey's brace gives her three goals and 10 points in the past two games.
  • Scarlato and Ebersole combined for six saves on the day.
  • Overall Wilson controlled the shout count 21-12, but shots on goal were more close with the Phoenix on top of an 8-7 difference.
  • Corner kicks also favored Wilson by an 8-3 margin.
