Field Hockey Holds Own With Batten, But Falls Late

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson Field Hockey team hosted Batten (formerly known as Virginia Wesleyan) in the first game of a busy day at Kris's Meadow on Saturday of Wilson Weekend. The Phoenix held their own against the Marlins as the two kept each other scoreless through the first three quarters, but a pair of goals by the visitors in the fourth provided the difference in the game.

The Basics
  • It was a defensive game from the start as neither team were able to get a shot off in the first 10 minutes. Batten ended that stretch with four shots in a two-minute span with Erin Sullivan (Jr., Byram, N.Y. / Lenape Valley) rejecting three of them. She added a fourth save just before the frame ended.
  • Wilson's attack picked up in the second with Ginnah Kendall (So., McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road) getting a pair of shots off with one being saved. Just under five minutes into the quarter Kate Seymour (Sr., Churchton, Md. / Southern) had a breakaway for a one-on-one chance with the goalie, but her shot went just a couple feet wide to the left post. Batten's offense found more chances late with four attempts, two of which were saved by Sullivan.
  • Sullivan kept the game scoreless with three saves on four shots at the start of the third, but Batten eventually broke through on a corner with 11:14 left in the fourth. After the send in, Regan Wells was able to find Samantha Middleton in a clogged net front for the first goal. Eight minutes later Wilson had a great chance to pull even with Mikayla Petersen (So., Glen Burnie, Md. / North County) and Madison Hamrick (Jr., Taneytown, Md. / Francis Scott Key) each getting a pair of shots off, but one of Petersen's attempts was block with the other three takes being saved. Batten added an insurance goal just a couple minutes later with 2:39 left in the contest.
Inside The Numbers
  • Despite the result, Sullivan still had an incredible game between the sticks and tallied nine saves to give her 29 over the last three contests.
  • Batten outshot Wilson 17-10 overall and 11-4 in shots on goal.
  • Penalty corners favored the Marlins by a 9-4 margin.
