Women's Soccer Downed By Goucher

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson battled Goucher for 90 minutes in a non-conference affair Thursday evening, and even though the Phoenix outshot their opposition, it was the Gophers who came out on top. The Blue and White had seven more attempts than Goucher, but an early goal had the Phoenix fighting from behind for most of the contest.

How It Happened
  • Both teams were still feeling each other out when the Gophers found an opportunity and made it count 4:51 into the contest. Ari Torres did the honors from the right side to the far post on an Abby Lee assist. Wilson's attack looked to equalize with shots from Ella Schmoyer (So., York, Pa. / West York), Caden Edmunds (FY, Etters, Pa. / Red Land), and Karen Cutler (Sr., Camp Hill, Pa. / Camp Hill), but the closest of the four combined takes over the next nine minutes saw Edmunds nail the woodwork on the upper left 90. Brynn Spangenberger (Jr., Chester Springs, Pa. / Owen J. Roberts) and Shaylee McGlinchey (FY, New Market, Md. / Oakdale) had the first shots on goal in the 26th and 30th minutes, respectively, with Goucher's Nia George making the save. Ashlynn Simmons (FY, Gerrardstown, W.Va. / Musselman) had back-to-back shots just inside the six-yard box, but George had saves from point blank range to keep it a 1-0 game at the break.
  • Wilson's best chance of the day came in the 61st minute on an odd-woman rush with Spangenberger appearing to score the equalizer. Unfortunately the Phoenix were called offsides. Things got worse from there as Torres made some strong defensive plays on Wilson defenders to score two more goals in the 67th and 68th minutes.
Inside The Numbers
  • Wilson outshot Goucher 19-12 overall, but shots on goal were more even with the Gophers on top of a 9-8 difference.
  • Corner kicks were 6-0 in favor of the Phoenix who had three in each half.

The Phoenix welcome Neumann for Wilson weekend in what will be a busy day on the turf at Kris's Meadow. Following the field hockey game to open the day, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new field. Kickoff with the Knights will follow at approximately 1 p.m.
