Phoenix, Mounties Duel To 2-2 Draw

(CRESSON, Pa.) – The Wilson women's soccer team got its first result of the season with a draw on the road at Mount Aloysius. The Phoenix posted two early goals and held off a strong comeback attempt by the Mounties to preserve the tie.

How It Happened
  • It was mostly a defensive game at the start with only one shot in the first 15 minutes which belonged to the Phoenix. It was no worry for Wilson as its second shot found the mark and gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Lena Pope (FY, Shepherdstown, W.Va. / Jefferson) set up the take by dribbling through the defense on the right side before dishing off Autumn DiCandilo (Jr., Harleysville, Pa. / Souderton) who was able to lace a tough angle shot to the upper left 90. Just eight minutes later, Karen Cutler (Sr., Camp Hill, Pa. / Camp Hill) took advantage of a failed clear attempt by the Mounties and lob a shot from about 30 yards out on the right side to the far post for a 2-0 lead.
  • The Mounties answered in the 40th minute on a set piece. A free kick landed in the six-yard box and came loose on just inside the far post where Brooke Mitchell was able to power it in uncontested. Mount Aloysius's second goal came 10 minutes into the second on another set piece. After a corner kick was sent in, it appeared goalkeeper Becca Scarlato (So., Severn, Md. / Glen Burnie) made an incredible save on the end line, but it was ruled the ball had crossed over the plain by the assistant referee. Wilson had a chance late for a game-winner with a corner kick in the final moments, but the threat was ended after the Phoenix were called offsides.
Inside The Numbers
  • Wilson outshot Mount Aloysius 13-6 overall. Shots on goal were more even with the Phoenix holding a 7-6 advantage. Corner kicks also favored the Phoenix by a 7-4 count.
  • Scarlato played the full 90 between the sticks and made four saves on the afternoon.
  • Mount Aloysius leads the all-time series now 5-1-2. Wilson has had the upper hand in recent years going 1-1-2 in the last four meetings.
  • DiCandilo's goal was her first since her rookie season when she scored in a victory over Rosemont.
  • Cutler's goal was the first of her career.
Up Next
The Phoenix will be back at home on the turf for two games this week. First up on the docket is Goucher who will visit Kris's Meadow on Thursday for a 5 p.m. kickoff. Wilson will then host Neumann on Saturday for Wilson Weekend with a special presentation of the opening of the new turf taking place before the game.
