Phoenix Fall Late After Gritty Defensive Battle

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) – The Wilson field hockey team opened up the weekend delivered a strong defensive performance against Rhodes on the neutral grounds at Washington & Jefferson Friday afternoon. The Phoenix held the Lynx scoreless through the first 50 minutes, but two late goals by the opposition resulted in a defeat for the Blue and White.

How It Happened
  • The Lynx were on the offense for most of the day and tested the Phoenix back line early with six first quarter shots and four penalty corners. Wilson netminder Erin Sullivan (Jr., Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley) was strong between the sticks and made two saves in that span while another shot was blocked to keep the game scoreless after one.
  • The Blue and White attack found some rhythm late in the second and were able to get two shots off, one by Isabel Blake (FY, Dover, Pa. / Northeastern) and another by Kate Seymour (Sr., Churchton, Md. / Southern), but both were blocked by the Rhodes defenders. On the opposite side Sullivan remained strong with three additional saves to keep the game 0-0 at the break.
  • In the second half, Wilson looked for a quick strike off the start as Mikayla Petersen (So., Glen Burnie, Md. / North County) took a swing, but it too was blocked. Wilson's chances from there on out were limited as Rhodes' defense got stronger. The Lynx attack eventually broke through four minutes into the fourth as Maria Zaporozhski. Just under two minutes later they added a second as Abbie Wallace found Meredith Dunn on a penalty corner.
Inside The Numbers
  • Sullivan hit double digits again with 10 saves in back-to-back games. It's the fourth time she's recorded at least 10 saves in her career. Her career high is 14 which was achieved at Rhodes last season.
  • She received assistance from Hannah Bost (Sr., Manheim, Pa. / Manheim Central) and Madison Hamrick (Jr., Taneytown, Md. / Francis Scott Key) who both added defensive saves. For Bost, it was her fourth DS of the season which ranks her at the top of the United East leaderboard and third in the nation.
