Women's Lacrosse Holds Off La Roche

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Sadie Fike (McClure, Pa. / Mifflin County) score four goals to help Wilson win its third consecutive game in a close contest against La Roche in the Steel City Tuesday afternoon. The junior scored 19 seconds into the contest and scored what proved to be the game winning goal in a close battle with the Redhawks.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 7, La Roche 5

Venue: Baierl Athletic Complex

Records: Wilson 4-9, 1-1 UE; La Roche 5-4, 0-1 AMCC

How It Happened
  • Wilson couldn't have asked for a much better start as a draw control win by Ellisa Gamby-Mickey (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) transitioned into Fike's first goal in 19 seconds to start the game. Gamby-Mickey added another helper less than a minute later as Paige Ney (Sr., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) made it 2-0 65 seconds into the game. Scoring laid dormant from there until La Roche scored late to make it 2-1 heading to the second.
  • The second started similar to the first, but this time it only took 12 seconds for Wilson to score with Grace Dickinson (Jr., Mt. Joy, Pa. / Donegal) chalking one up for the Blue and White. Gamby-Mickey then made it 4-1 with 3:50 to go until the half, but La Roche generated some momentum and scored a pair 49 seconds apart to make it 4-3 at the break.
  • Fike made it a 5-3 game to start the second half score as she took the feed from Alaina Marek (Jr., Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) with 9:31 to go in the third. However, the Redhawks just didn't go away and cut the deficit back to one midway through the quarter. A La Roche yellow card then provided the Phoenix with a player-up opportunity and it took them just four seconds to convert as Fike scored on a Marek assists.
  • Fike made it 7-4 with 6:08 to go on a free-position goal. Wilson wasn't in the clear just yet as it took the Redhawks just eight seconds to answer. The Phoenix defense stepped up and limited La Roche to just one shot the rest of the way to seal the game.
Inside The Numbers
  • Fike's four goals put her over 20 for the season. She wasn't just effective on the attack as she provided four caused turnovers and eight ground balls.
  • Gamby-Mickey was also busy on both ends of the field. Offensively she added three points on a goal and two assists. Defensively she caused two turnovers, picked up five ground balls, and won three draw controls.
  • Trinity Brown (Jr., Laurel, Md. / Resevoir) added three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Riley Lemay (Jr., Saugerties, N.Y. / Saugerties) also shored up the back line with two caused turnovers and four ground balls.
  • Kaelyn Goff (Jr., Union Bridge, Md. / Francis Scott Key) was 50% once again with five saves between the pipes.
