Baseball Edged Out By LBC

(LANCASTER, Pa.) – The Wilson baseball team nearly pulled off an incredible comeback as it fell to Lancaster Bible on Tuesday evening. The Phoenix went down 6-0 through four innings and scored runs in four of the final five innings, but ultimately fell to the Chargers by one.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 8, Lancaster Bible 9

Venue: Cooper Park

Records: Wilson 4-16-1, 3-5 UE; Lancaster Bible 10-11, 5-3 UE

How It Happened
  • LBC didn't waste any time getting its bats going and promptly scored three runs in the first. The Chargers added a solo run in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead.
  • Wilson eventually generated some momentum in the fifth. Seth Bivens (Sr., Hancock, Md. / Hancock / Hagerstown C.C.) sparked the offense with a single to center before Cody Valentine (Jr., Fairfield, Pa. / St. Andrews) doubled to left to bring him around. Valentine scored one batter later as Samuel Martin (Jr., Maugansille, Md. / North Hagerstown / Hagerstown C.C.) scored him on a base hit. Two more runs followed in the sixth. Jordan Stucki (Jr., Costa Mesa, Calif. / Costa Mesa) led off with a base hit and eventually moved to first where he scored after Martin reached on an error.
  • The Phoenix weren't done and proceeded to take the lead one inning later. Justin Clapp (Jr., Redondo Beach, Calif. / Redondo Beach / Cal State Monterey Bay) hit in Derek Chavera (FY, Falfurrias, Texas / Falfurrias) on a grounder to get within one before Valentine tied the game with an RBI single to bring in Zachary Tyler (FY, Colnoia, N.J. / JFK Memorial). Martin then drew a bases loaded walk to plate Tyler O'Brien (So., Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) to make the score 7-6.
  • LBC was quick to tie the game with a solo homer in the bottom half. They added two more on a wild pitch and a sac fly. Valentine was able to knock in O'Brien in the top of the ninth, but left a runner stranded on second in the ninth.
