(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson made Senior Day one to remember as it soared past Cedar Crest on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The seniors shined as well with
Paige Ney (Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) and
Alaina Marek (Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) leading the offense with four points each, while
Sadie Fike (McClure, Pa. / Mifflin County) was strong defensively with six ground balls.
The win had added importance as the Phoenix won a program-record fifth consecutive game. The Blue and White also secured the No. 2 seed in the United East Championship which will result in a home game in the semifinals.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 9, Cedar Crest 4
Venue: Kris's Meadow
Records: Wilson 6-9, 2-1 UE; Cedar Crest 8-6, 0-2 UE
How It Happened
- While it was a defensively sound game, it didn't take long for the scoreboard to get lit up as Ney scored her first goal on an assist from Marek just 55 seconds into the contest. From there both teams would combine for 11 additional shots with seven on goal, but nothing was successful as Wilson went to the second with a 1-0 lead.
- The second started similar to the first with Ney finding the back of the net less than a minute into the frame. This time Finley Vandevander (So., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) provided the helper for the 2-0 lead. Midway through the quarter Cedar Crest scored its first goal as Trinity Burk connected with Ellie Terranova. The Phoenix got the final say as Alyvian Henneman (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) scored on a dish from Marek to make it 3-1 at the break.
- Things picked up in the third quarter with teams combining for six goals. Thankfully most of them were for the Phoenix. Fike started the trend with a free position goal on a power play 4:30 into the half. Another Falcon card gave the Phoenix another player up goal as Vandevander scored on an assist from Grace Dickinson (Jr. Mt. Joy., Chambersburg, Donegal). Wilson wasn't done taking advantage of the numbers game and Fike made it 6-1 on a Marek assist. Turnabout was fair play, however, and Cedar Crest added two player up goals with Terranova and Burk scoring. With the shot clock in single digits, Ney drew a foul and converted from eight meters to make it 7-3 at the end of the frame.
- Terranova scored again to start Cedar Crest on a positive note in the fourth, but Wilson answered as Henneman took the pass from Ney to make it 8-4 just 66 seconds later. Wilson defense then took over as the Falcons mounted one last comeback attempt. Nine Cedar Crest shots followed, but only two were on target and Kaelyn Goff (Jr., Union Bridge, Francis Scott Key) made the save each time. The pipes were also kind to Goff as two shots went off the woodwork. Marek scored with 2:04 left to set up the final difference.
Inside The Numbers
- Ney finished with four points on three goals and an assist. She now has back-to-back games with a hat trick.
- Marek also finished with four points with a goal and three assists.
- Ellisa Gamby-Mickey (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) gave the Falcons defense and special teams problems all day with four draw control wins, two caused turnovers, and four ground balls.
- Goff was once again over 50% with nine saves. She had a save percentage of 692 and faced a total of 24 shots.
