(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – A strong defensive effort from Wilson nearly carried it to a victory, but St. Vincent found the net twice in the final three minutes to steal a nail-biting contest. For a moment it appeared that the Phoenix could be celebrating a fourth quarter come-from-behind win as
Sadie Fike (Jr., McClure, Pa. / Mifflin County) scored a pair of goals midway through the frame to give the Blue and White the lead. The Bearcats countered by tying the game with 2:26 left and adding another goal 17 seconds later.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 5, St. Vincent 6
Venue: Trojan Stadium
Records: Wilson 0-4, St. Vincent 3-1
How It Happened
- Fike started off the day hot as she found the back of the net 4:30 into the contest for the game's first goal with an assist from Ellisa Gamby-Mickey (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg). Fouls in the offensive zone allowed the Bearcats multiple attempts from eight meters and they were able to cash in on a couple of them for a 2-1 lead at the end of the period. Special teams aided another score as St. Vincent went up 3-1 during a Phoenix green card. The score remained there through halftime.
- Alyvia Henneman (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) provided a spark at the start of the third quarter when she took a feed from Finley Vandevander (So., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) and scored to get the Phoenix within one. The momentum unfortunately didn't last long as St. Vincent won the draw and scored 44 seconds later. Defense was pivotal the rest of the way as neither team scored afterwards in the quarter.
- Vandevander brought the Phoenix back within one with 9:29 to go in the fourth. With new-found momentum, Wilson overcame a penalty with a shorthanded goal by Fike on a Gamby-Mickey assist to tie the game with 7:04 remaining. Trinity Brown (Jr., Laurel, Md. / Resevoir) then helped further the process by causing a turnover, getting a ground ball, and drawing a penalty which allowed Fike to score a go-ahead goal with 4:13 to go. A free-position goal ended up benefiting the Bearcats again a few minutes later and the visitors won the ensuing draw before going down and scoring the game-winner seconds later.
Inside The Numbers
- Fike's second career hat trick gives her six goals on the season. She now has scored in eight consecutive games dating back to last season.
- Brown excelled defensively with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Riley Lemay (Jr., Saugerties, N.Y. / Saugerties) was right behind her with three and three, respectively.
- Kaelyn Goff (Jr., Union Bridge, Md. / Francis Scott Key) was over .500 once again as she made seven saves on the afternoon.
