(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – In its final game before the conference opener, Wilson hosted Southern Virginia in a defensive standoff on Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Phoenix, the Knights used a big second quarter to propel them to the win.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 2 Southern Virginia 6
Venue: Kris's Meadow
Reocrds: Wilson 1-8, Southern Virginia 4-5
How It Happened
- Southern Virginia had the slight upper hand offensively in the opening quarter as it outshot the Phoenix 7-3. Despite that, only one was on goal with Kaelyn Goff (Jr., Biology, Md. / Francis Scott Key) making the stop. The Knights eventually found the back of the net shortly into the second and built upon that momentum with another couple of goals in the opening four minutes. Ellie Patterson was the catalyst for the Knights' attack as she scored one of the early goals before assisting another. Patterson completed the hat trick with two additional goals to give the visitors a 5-0 lead at the break.
- Alaina Marek (Jr., Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) led the charge for the Phoenix in the second half as she added a pair of goals. The first came midway through the frame. With 3:18 to go, Marek added a second on the help of Paige Ney (Sr., Biglerville). The Knights had the last word, however, and scored just under a minute layer. Both teams did hold each other off the scoreboard in the fourth.
Inside The Numbers
- Despite the result, Goff was still impressive with 11 saves on 28 shots faced.
- Trinity Brown (Jr., Laurel, Md. / Resevoir) excelled defensively with four caused turnovers and six ground balls.
- Sadie Fike (Jr., McClure, Pa. / Mifflin County) was also strong defensively with six ground balls and three caused turnovers.
