Senior Night Served to Perfection: Phoenix Drop 23 Aces in Sweep

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) - They say you can't have too much of a good thing, but Wilson tested that theory with a program-record 23 aces in a 3-0 Senior Night sweep of Penn State Schuylkill on Thursday evening. The mark obliterated the previous mark of 17 set against Pratt in 2020.

Nine of them went to Ryan Koontz (Jr., York Haven, Pa. / Red Land) which was one shy of the school record set last year. Adan Rodriguez-Sapien (Jr., Newport News, Va. / Woodside) added four.

Demetrius Simmons (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg), Vincent Natale (Mt. Airy, Md. / Linganore), and Jacob McCoy (York, Pa. / Spring Grove) were all honored prior to the match for Senior Night.

The Basics

Scores: Wilson 3, Penn State Schuylkill 0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-6)

Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House

Records: Wilson 12-8, Penn State Schuylkill 2-10

How It Happened
  • The Lions had the quick upper hand early with a 3-1 lead at the start, but the momentum didn't last as a Jackson Wolfe (So., Abbottstown, Pa. / New Oxford) kill tied the set before Koontz dished out three-straight aces. Simmons got in on the mix shortly after with a pair to add to his program record. Back-to-back aces from Rodriguez-Sapien made it 14-6. Schuylkill was able to cut the deficit to five, but Wilson was too strong and finished with kills from Wolfe and McCoy.
  • Natale continued the trend by starting the second with an ace. Two more followed from Koontz to make it 6-2. Simmons showed off his attack abilities with three kills while Koontz added a pair to help the Phoenix go up 18-7. It was all Wilson the rest of the frame to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Phoenix didn't cool off as they raced out to a 10-1 lead. Koontz added two more aces and joined Simmons for a block. He added two more aces at the back end of the rally. Wes Reall Jr. (FY, Carlisle, Pa. / Big Spring) kept the front line of the offense true with a pair of kills to go up 12-2. Wolfe added an ace before Peter Marston (FY, Grand Island, N.Y. / Grand Island) subbed in and chalked up three more in the same spot of the rotation for a 17-3. Despite all the offensive success, it was a defensive play that ended the night as Simmons blocked a Lions attack for the final point.
Inside The Numbers
  • Simmons and McCoy paced the offense up front with seven kills each.
  • Natale quarterbacked the offense and totaled 24 assists.
  • Wilson entered the night No. 12 nationally with 2.00 aces per set.
  • The 23 aces are tied for sixth-most for a team in a three-set match this season.
  • Wolfe paced the defense with five digs and three blocks.
