Phoenix Overpowered By Mustangs

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson faced a tough test in Stevenson at home Wednesday evening and fell in straight sets to the visitors. The Phoenix gave a fierce battle to stay with the Mustangs, but were kept just out of reach of taking a set.

The Basics

Scores: Wilson 0, Stevenson 3 (25-20, 25-19, 25-19)

Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House

Records: Wilson 10-8, 2-1 UE; Stevenson 11-7, 2-0 MAC

How It Happened
  • After evenly splitting the opening 10 points, Stevenson started to create some separation with a pair of Jackson Bones kills and a couple of Wilson errors. A block by Demetrius Simmons (Sr., Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) and Scotty Zorn (FY, York, Pa. / Dallastown) along with kills from Jackson Wolfe (So., Abbottstown, Pa. / New Oxford) and Jacob McCoy (Sr., York, Pa. / Spring Grove) helped Wilson stay close by making it 12-10 before the Mustangs padded their lead and eventually going up 20-14. Another Wolfe kill and three Stevenson miscues gave Wilson some hope before the Mustangs closed the frame with five of the next seven.
  • Wilson gave Stevenson another run in the second. Ryan Koontz (Jr., York Haven, Pa. / Red Land) tied it at 7-all and eventually gave the Phoenix a 9-8 lead after an ace. The Phoenix took leads again on a Zorn kill and a pair of Mustang errors, but the visitors kept with the Blue and White and took control after a 6-1 run to make the score 20-16. Zorn added another pair of late kills, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
  • A 6-0 run near the start helped Stevenson take an 8-3 lead. Wilson was able to get within two in the middle game on multiple occasions with Koontz providing two kills during the push only to see Stevenson answer. This time the Mustangs scored six of the last eight to end the night.
Inside The Numbers
  • Koontz paced the Phoenix attack with nine kills. Jacob McCoy (Sr., York, Pa. / Spring Grove) added seven in an incredibly efficient manner as he hit .500 for the night.
  • Wolfe reached double digs with 11 on the night. He added two blocks up front.
  • Simmons had a strong night up front with three blocks.
