Chavera's Slam Helps Lift Phoenix Over King's

(ABERDEEN, Md.) – Derek Chavera's (FY, Falfurrias, Texas / Falfurrias) seventh inning grand slam highlighted an impressive come-from-behind victory for Wilson as it notched its first win of the year. The Phoenix trailed King's 5-0 headed into the seventh, but posted seven runs in the frame to jumpstart the Blue and White bats en route to a triumph over the Monarchs.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 12, King's 8

Venue: Ripken Complex

Records: Wilson 1-5-1, King's 3-4

How It Happened
  • King's got on the board first with a pair of RBI base hits in the third inning. The Monarchs posted two more as Dominic Carafa homered over the right field fence in the fifth. A passed ball in the sixth helped make it 5-0 in favor of the designated home team.
  • The Phoenix offense came alive in a big way in the seventh. After Garrett Drish (FY, Annapolis, Md. / St. Frances) and Jermane Miller (Jr., Wilmington, Del. / Alexis I. DuPont) reached on an error and a walk, respectively, Joe Nawrocki (So., Parkton, Md. / Winters Mill) brought in Drish on a base hit to right. Two batters later, Sam Martin (Jr., Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown / Hagerstown C.C.) singled through the left side to score Nawrocki. After Justin Clapp (Jr., Redondo Beach, Calif. / Redondo Beach / Cal State Monterey Bay) walked to load the bases, Chavera sent a 3-1 pitch over the right field fence to vault the Phoenix into the lead. Seth Bivens (Sr., Hancock, Md. / Hancock / Hagerstown C.C.) followed with a double which allowed him to score on an Evan Wollman (So., Bordentown, N.J. / Bordentown / Rosemont) base knock to right.
  • The Monarchs got one back in the bottom half, but Wilson wasn't finished and added another four. Nawrocki got the ball rolling literally and figuratively with a double down the left field line and took advantage of a pair of wild pitches to make it 8-6. Valentine then scored on a Martin groundout from first after King's thought it had the third out and walked off the field. Later in the frame Clapps scored on a double steal with Chavera swiping second. Chavera then scored on a Bivens double to left.
  • King's didn't go down quietly and scored on an error in the eighth. Wilson got it back in the ninth on back-to-back doubles to right by Dorian Goldston (FY, Baltimore, Md. / St. Frances) and Drish. The Monarchs plated one in the ninth, but left the bases loaded to end the game.
Inside The Numbers
  • Bivens, Drish, and Nawrocki all had multiple hit games with Bivens going for doubles both times.
  • Chavera, Clapp, and Nawrocki all reached safely three times in the day.
  • Frank Lasso (FY, Bethlehem, Pa. / Liberty) recorded the win in relief to improve to 1-1 on the year. He allowed two runs, one earned on three hits while striking out a pair in 2.1 innings of work.
