Balanced Attack Leads Wilson By Bison

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – A balanced attack that saw four players record at least nine kills helped Wilson dispose of Gallaudet in United East men's volleyball action on Tuesday evening. They did so in a highly efficient manor as well with the quartet all hitting over .333 for the night.

The Basics

Scores: Wilson 3, Gallaudet 0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17)

Venue: Gannett Field House

Records: Wilson 10-7, 2-1 UE; Gallaudet 5-14, 2-2 UE

How It Happened
  • A 6-1 run in the first set appeared to put the Phoenix in the driver's seat with Jacob McCoy (Sr., York, Pa. / Spring Grove), Satvik Sharma (So., Hummelstown, Pa. / Hershey), and Ryan Koontz (Jr., York Haven, Pa. / Red Land) all scoring kills early. The Bison had other plans, however, and answered with a 7-0 run to make it 14-11. The Phoenix were able to answer and scored eight of the next nine with kills from Demetrius Simmons (Sr., Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg), Jackson Wolfe (So., Abbottstown, Pa. / New Oxford), and Koontz aiding in making it 19-15. Wilson remained in control from there to take the first set.
  • Both teams were even through the first 12 points before Wilson created separation with an 9-3 run. Simmons sparked the rally with kills on the first two points. Scotty Zorn (FY, York, Pa. / Dallastown) and McCoy each added two late. Teams went point for point the rest of the way and gave Wilson a 2-0 lead as it kept the visitors just out of reach.
  • Gallaudet again stayed close at the start, but Wilson scored five-straight to make it 13-8 and take control of the frame. Koontz had two kills in the stretch. He added another along with kills from Wolfe and Simmons before Sharma ended the night serving an ace.
Inside The Numbers
  • McCoy and Zorn paced the Phoenix with 10 kills each, but Simmons and Wolfe were right there with nine. Simmons was incredibly accurate as his attack percentage clocked in at .750. McCoy was accurate more often than not at .588.
  • Sharma set up the squad with 41 assists.
  • Camden Sterner (Jr., Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove) led the back row with a match-best 16 digs. Koontz picked up a dozen.
  • Koontz and Sharma each had three aces.
