Baseball Drops Twin Bill At Waynesburg

(WAYNESBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson baseball team had its first doubleheader of the season and fell in both games to Waynesburg on Wednesday afternoon. The Phoenix battled in the opener and fell to the Yellow Jackets by just a couple of runs, but the hosts had Wilson's number in Game 2 with five runs in the first two innings en route to a shutout.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson2, Waynesburg 4
Game 2 – Wilson 0, Waynesburg 7

Venue: Waynesburg Baseball Field

Records: Wilson 0-3, Waynesburg 4-2

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • The Yellow Jackets struck first in the first with a pair of hits leading to one run. They added to it with three runs in the third with one run scoring on a base hit to right field and two more scoring on wild pitches.
  • Wilson eventually struck in the top of the fifth. Cody Valentine (Jr., Fairfield, Pa. / St. Andrews) led off with a base hit up the middle. After moving to second on a walk and stealing third, he scored on a ground out to first. Derek Chavera (FY, Falfurrias, Texas / Falfurrias) scored Seth Bivens (Sr., Hancock, Md. / Hancock / Hagerstown C.C.) one play later on a base hit to left. Wilson was able to get a base runner on in the sixth and two in the seventh, but were only able to get to second base.
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • Waynesburg opened the nightcap with a three-run first after an error gave the Yellow Jackets additional life. Two more runs followed in the second on three hits and a hit batter. On the opposite end of the inning, the Phoenix's bats struggled as they were limited to two hits. Waynesburg added another pair in the sixth for the final score.
Inside The Numbers
  • Chavera had a strong day going 3-for-3 with a walk in the opener. He was also responsible for bringing in a run.
  • Dallas Gilbert (Sr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg / Penn State Harrisburg) struck out five and Dalton Musser (FY, New Cumberland, Pa. / Red Land) fanned another pair. Musser threw a pair of perfect innings.
