(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – It was a tough start to the season for Wilson as it fell to DelVal on an unusually warm and sunny February Saturday afternoon. The Aggies scored a pair in the first and added big innings in the third and seventh to vault ahead before the game was called on an account of darkness.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 4, DelVal 16 (7 innings)
Venue: Henninger Field
Records: Wilson 1-0, DelVal 0-1
How It Happened
- DelVal didn't waste any time getting its offense moving as a walk and two hits led to a pair of runs in the top of the first. Wilson was able to answer in the bottom of the second as Derek Chavera (FY, Falfurrias, Texas / Falfurrias) scored on a sacrifice fly by Charles Musser (Jr., Thurmont, Md. / Linganore) after leading off the inning with a single. The Aggies then put more pressure on the Blue and White with a five-spot in the third.
- Wilson cut the deficit down to four in in the bottom of the sixth. Justin Clapp (Jr., Redondo Beach, Calif. / Redondo Beach / Cal State Monterey Bay) brought in Wilson's second run after reaching on a walk and coming around on a double down the left field line by Tyler O'Brien (So., Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora). Chavera remained hot and singled to left center to bring him in. Unfortunately, once again DelVal didn't wait long to respond. Five hits and three walks helped the visitors bat around again and plate nine runs. Evan Wollman (So., Bordentown, N.J. / Bordentown / Rosemont) walked in Seth Bivens (Sr., Hancock, Md. / Hancock / Hagerstown C.C.) in the bottom of the seventh, but the Phoenix couldn't dent the deficit anymore and left the bases juiced.
Inside The Numbers
- In addition to Chavera, Samuel Martin (Jr., Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown / Hagerstown CC) had a multiple-hit day and reached base a third time on a walk.
- Frank Lasso (FY, Bethlehem, Pa. / Liberty) had an impressive debut as he pitched 3.2 innings of relief work and struck out six while giving up just once hit.
