Seymour Scores, But Field Hockey Falls In OT

(MALVERN, Pa.) – Sixty minutes wasn't enough as Wilson and Immaculata to decide their United East field hockey clash on Wednesday evening. Unfortunately for the Phoenix, it was the Mighty Macs who came out on top as the hosts converted a penalty stroke for the win in the first meeting between the two schools in nine years.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 1, Immaculata 2 (OT)

Venue: Draper Walsh Stadium

Records: Wilson 5-7, 3-2 UE; Immaculata 5-10, 2-3 UE

How It Happened
  • Wilson faced an early barrage by the Mighty Macs with five penalty corners leading to five shots. Phoenix goalkeeper Erin Sullivan (Jr., Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley) was solid throughout and made three saves during the process while two others were blocked. Sullivan made another stop with just under two minutes left in the first to keep the game scoreless.
  • The game remained scoreless until the second half when Immaculata took advantage of a penalty corner as Alexis Andrada was able to find the back of the cage. Immaculata put the pressure on again in the fourth with seven unanswered shots with Sullivan making three additional saves. Fortunately Wilson was able to get some rhythm as Kate Seymour (Sr., Churchton, Md. / Southern) had a breakaway up the right side. In the process she took on three Immaculata defenders and dodged all of them en route to a one-on-one chance with the keeper. Closing in on the end line, Seymour swung and went five hole on the goalie to pull Wilson even.
  • In overtime, Immaculata had the first chance to end the game as a shot went off the post. Less than a minute later Wilson had two chances with Isabel Blake (FY, Dover, Pa. / Northeastern) getting consecutive shots off that needed saves. Immaculata returned serve and countered with a shot that was saved by Sullivan. Then seven minutes into overtime, the Mighty Macs had a breakaway which drew a foul by the Phoenix defense and awarded the hosts an penalty stroke. Andrada was chosen to do the honors and converted to end the game.
Inside The Numbers
  • Despite the result, Sullivan was solid between the pipes with eight saves on the evening.
  • Seymour's goal was her eighth of the season, third most in the United East.
Up Next
Wilson will close the regular season at Penn State Harrisburg at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Phoenix will still have at least one game after that as they will advance to the postseason once again with the first round starting on Tuesday.
