Phoenix Downed By Wildcats In Explosive Second Half

(WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.) – It was a tale of two halves as Wilson battled Penn in United East men's soccer competition on Tuesday evening. The Phoenix and Wildcats battled to a scoreless stalemate in the first half only to see five goals scored in the second. Unfortunately for the Phoenix, most of them belonged to the opposition.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 1, Penn 4

Venue: UPMC Field

Records: Wilson 1-9-2, 1-4-0 UE; Penn 8-4-3, 5-1-0 UE

How It Happened
  • Despite the lack of goals in the first half, both teams had ample opportunities, especially in the opening 20 minutes. Penn opened up with a header off the post just 2:07 into the contest and had another shot go wide a minute later. Bryson Curtis (Sr., Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) helped Wilson answer with a shot on target in the fifth saved by the Wildcats' Owen Ragula. After another Wildcats header was saved by Phoenix netminder Noah Lucas (FY, Landisburg, Pa. / Heritage Christian), Wilson saw shots by Jace Williams (Sr., Chesapeake, Va. / Hickory) go wide in addition to takes by William Serrano (FY, Bristow, Va. / Brentsville) and Eric Arbogast (Sr., Duncansville, Pa. / Hollidaysburg) saved by Ragula. From there Penn picked up the pace and kept the Phoenix defense on their heels. Eight more Wildcat shots followed with Lucas making three saves before the break.
  • After halftime, Penn broke through early in the second half on a set piece that saw Warrick Beachy score on a corner kick in the 51st minute. Three minutes later, Penn's Diego Diaz made it 2-0. Wilson remained in the battle and finally broke through in the 72nd when Arbogast found the back of the net. The momentum didn't last too long as the hosts were able to respond six minutes later to make it 3-1. Penn then added an insurance goal in the 84th.
Inside The Numbers
  • Penn led the shot chart by a 28-12 count overall. Shots on goal were closer, but still had the Wildcats on top 13-8.
  • Corner kicks heavily favored Penn by an 8-1 margin.
  • Arbogast's goal was his first of the season and third of his career.
  • Lucas finished the night with nine saves.
