(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Tuesday's United East field hockey contest pitted Wilson up against the defending conference champion in St. Mary's with the Phoenix falling to a high-powered Seahawks squad. The Phoenix battled for the full 60 minutes, but St. Mary's proved too much for the Blue and White.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 0, St. Mary's 5
Venue: Kris's Meadow Turf Field
Records: Wilson 4-6, 2-1 UE; St. Mary's 6-6, 2-1 UE
How It Happened
- St. Mary's tested the Phoenix back line early and often with eight shots in the first quarter alone. Wilson netminder Erin Sullivan (Jr., Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley) was put to work early with four saves in the frame, but St. Mary's were able to get two by her as Safi Stimely and Carolina Gartland found the back of the cage. Olivia Schwendeman added another in the second. St. Mary's threatened to increase its lead near the end of the half, but Sullivan made to more big saves and Madison Hamrick (Jr., Taneytown, Md. / Francis Scott Key) recorded a defensive save just before the quarter expired.
- Wilson had its best offensive opportunity at the start of the third quarter. The Phoenix were able to penetrate the Seahawks' defense and fired off three shots. Kate Seymour (Sr., Churchton, Md. / Southern) had the only one on target which was saved to start the flurry. Ginnah Kendall (So., McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road) and Seymour had additional attempts that were blocked. On the opposite end, Wilson was able to keep St. Mary's off the scoreboard in the third, but the visitors added a pair in the fourth to set up the final score.
Inside The Numbers
- Sullivan was tested throughout the day and came up huge multiple times. It resulted in a new career-high 13 saves. The baker's dozen also marked the fourth time she's reached double-digits in stops.
- She had some help as Hamrick was also busy on the goal line. After the defensive save to end the first half, she added a couple more to finish with three. That gives her seven on the season which ties her with WestConn's Kaitlyn Biase for fourth in the nation.
