Seeing Double: Hamrick Scores Twice in Wilson Win

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Haley Hamrick (Jr., Taneytown, Md. / Union Bridge) has a twin sister on the team, but she was seeing double for another reason as she netted both goals as Wilson defeated Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday. Ironically both goals came in the second quarter as the Phoenix took down the Griffins to remain unbeaten in United East action.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 2, Gwynedd Mercy 0

Venue: Kris's Meadow

Records: Wilson 4-5, 2-0 United East; Gwynedd Mercy 0-12, 0-2 United East

How It Happened
  • The Blue and White controlled the pace from the start as they took five shots and had three corners in the opening two minutes. Gwynedd Mercy was eventually able to find some momentum and were awarded a corner that generated one shot that was saved by Erin Sullivan (Jr., Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley) leaving the game square at 0-0 after one.
  • It didn't take long for the Phoenix to get things rolling in the second. A penalty corner was given just thirty seconds in, and after a pair of Greta Harkreader (FY, Camp Hill, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) shots were saved, Hamrick was there to pounce on the loose ball and pound it home for a 1-0 lead just 15 seconds later.
  • Another set piece benefitted Wilson four minutes later. Hamrick again served as the inserter and found Kate Seymour (Sr., Churchton, Md. / Southern) who took a shot that was saved. Ginnah Kendall (So., McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road) looked to capitalize and fired another shot off the rebound that hit the left post. Thankfully the ricochet went to the right side of the cage were Hamrick slammed home the score with a wide-open net front.
  • Wilson kept the pressure on for the rest of the game with 13 more shots coming in the second half. At the same time the Phoenix's back line led by Hannah Bost (Sr., Manheim, Pa. / Manheim Central), Jade Syto (Sr., Newark, Del. / Christiana), and Madison Hamrick (Jr., Taneytown, Md. / Francis Scott Key) helped limit Gwynedd Mercy's chances and didn't allow a corner.
Inside The Numbers
  • Haley Hamrick's brace were her second and third goals of the season, and her first goals since the season opener against Sweet Briar.
  • Sullivan was spectacular between the pipes and made six saves on eight shots faced. The result gave her back-to-back shutouts and her third clean sheet of the season.
  • Wilson peppered the Griffins defense and outshot the visitors 31-8. Penalty corners also heavily favored the Blue and White by an 18-5 count.
