(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson women's basketball team defeated Penn State Brandywine for its second-straight win and third victory in the past four games on Wednesday evening.
Leah Laubach (So., Marietta, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) and
Chelcie Forrester (Sr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg / WVU Potomac State) both recorded double-doubles, while
Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon (Jr., Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) drained five 3-pointers to help lead the Phoenix to victory.
The win puts the Phoenix back above .500 for the season, but more importantly puts them at 4-4 in the conference standings and in the thick of the field for a playoff spot.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 75, Penn State Brandywine 58
Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House
Records: Wilson 10-9, 4-4
How It Happened
- Caldwell-Degnon and Laubach set the tone early by opening the game with a trey and a layup. The Lions started to follow suit as they made 3-pointers on three consecutive trips to get back into the game midway through the frame before a Chloe Irving (So., Martinsburg, W.Va. / Martinsburg) layup and a triple by Laubach gave Wilson a 21-17 lead heading into the second quarter.
- Brandywine's Taylor Mims provided a boost for the visitors as a couple of early second quarter layups helped put them up shortly by a 23-22 margin. Irving answered with a 3-pointer, but Brandywine was able to maintain momentum for most of the quarter and went up 34-31 after a Journey Handy 3-pointer with 2:04 left in the half. Around that time the Phoenix lived up to their name and caught fire with Caldwell-Degnon sparking the charge with a game-tying trey. Jewels Torres (Sr., York, Pa. / West York) then put Wilson in the lead with a free throw and an old-fashioned three-point play before another launch from the wing by Caldwell-Degnon found its mark at the buzzer and gave Wilson a 41-34 lead at halftime.
- Wilson's defense stepped up in the second half and limited the Lions to just 21.6% on field goals. On the opposite side the Phoenix were able to extend their lead with their highest scoring frame of the night. A main catalyst for that was Laubach who scored nine and pulled in six rebounds alone in the third. Four were on the offensive end which translated to six of the eight second chance points in the period. The defense remained strong the rest of the way and limited the Lions to just 11 points in the fourth as the Phoenix pulled away for the win.
