(READING, Pa.) – Jewels Torres (Sr., York, Pa. / West York) broke the school record for most assists in a career as Wilson won its third-straight game with a victory over Penn State Berks on Saturday. She needed three to tie the previous mark of 322 set by Theresa Phelps which has stood for 25 years and broke it with a dish to
Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon (Jr., Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) on a 3-pointer as the Phoenix pulled away from the Lions.
With the win, the Phoenix move into a tie for sixth place in the United East standings with four conference games remaining on the schedule. The top 10 teams qualify for the postseason.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 67, Penn State Berks 46
Venue: Beaver Athletics & Wellness Center
Records: Wilson 11-9, 5-4 UE; Penn State Berks 3-17, 2-7 UE
How It Happened
- There was plenty of back-and-forth action to start the day with five lead changes and two ties in a defensive first quarter. Becca Cordell (Sr., Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro) tied the game at 10-all later in the frame before Torres put the Phoenix in front for good with a layup coupled with an and-one free throw just before the buzzer to give Wilson momentum heading into the second.
- That fed into a 13-1 run that stretched into the second quarter as Wilson took a 21-11 lead after another Torres layup. That lead grew to as many as 13 after a pair of Leah Laubach (So., Marietta, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) free throws. Berks was able to go on a small run and cut the deficit to seven in an attempt to answer, but the Phoenix were able to close the frame with momentum once again as Chelcie Forrester (Sr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) beat the buzzer with a layup on a rebound and putback for a 30-21 lead at the break.
- Wilson exploded offensively in the third quarter. While Berks was able to get as close as six, the Phoenix countered with a 10-0 run at the tail end of the period which resulted in a 51-34 lead headed to the fourth. They were never threatened the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
- With six assists, Torres now has 325 for her career. She entered the day ranked No. 19 in Division III for most career assists among active players.
- Theresa Phelps set the previous mark of 322 set from 1997 to 2001. Phelps still holds the single season assists record of 112 set during the 1999-2000 season.
- Laubach led all players with 15 points. She added eight rebounds, three assists, three steals, and a block.
- Caldwell-Degnon joined her as the only other Phoenix in double-figures with 14 points. She was on fire as she went 5-for-7 overall and 4-for-6 on 3-point attempts.
- Chloe Irving (So., Martinsburg, W.Va. / Martinsburg) cleaned up the glass where she pulled in 12 rebounds.
