Men's Hoops Comeback Attempt Comes Up Short

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Four Wilson players scored in double-figures, but it wasn't enough as the Phoenix fell to Penn State Brandywine on Wednesday evening. Jalen Bowie (Sr., Frederick, Md. / Frederick / Shippensburg) led the way with an impressive all-around game as he paced the Phoenix with 19 points after going 7-for-13 from the field.

The Phoenix nearly pulled off an incredible comeback as they trailed by 19 in the second half. They were able to cut the deficit down to five, but the Lions were able to pull away down the stretch to preserve the win.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 70, Penn State Brandywine 83

Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House

Records: Wilson 6-14, 2-6 UE; Penn State Brandywine 12-9, 7-2 UE

How It Happened
  • It was a back-and-forth first half that featured 11 lead changes and three ties. After a Bowie free throw made the score 23-22 with 6:49 left in the first half, Brandywine went on a 21-7 run to close the first half. That momentum fed into the second half as the Lions quickly went up by 17 at the start of the second half.
  • Wilson was not deterred and started a momentum shift of its own. After a free throw made the score 53-34, the Phoenix proceeded to go on a 14-0 run to get back into contention. Jaylin Davis (Sr., Hampton, Va. / Kecoughtan / Lynchburg) sparked the run with six consecutive points, the first two which were on layups. After Bowie blocked a pair of shots on one of the Lions' return trips, Davis scored two more on free throws. Old-fashioned three-point plays by Bowie and Jalen Pierce (Sr., Richmond, Va. / Collegiate / Millersville) then put Wilson within seven at 53-46 before a Tobias Reese (So., Mansfield, Texas / St. Elizabeth (Del.)) led to a breakaway dunk by Armani Jones (Sr., Chicago, Ill. / Christ The King / Bryant & Stratton) that made the score 53-48.
  • After teams exchanged layups on the next two possessions, momentum started to switch back over to Brandywine who eventually built its lead back up to 19. Triples by Reese and Pierce helped get the deficit back down to 11 with three minutes left, but that was the closest the Phoenix could get the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
  • Bowie finished with 19 points after shooting 7-for-13 from the field. He was solid all around the court with eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals on his stat line.
  • Pierce was right behind him with 17 points on a 6-for-11 evening. Davis and Reese joined them in double figures with 13 points each.
  • Amari Little paced the Lions with 20 points. He was nearly perfect after going 8-for-9 overall and 4-for-5 on 3-pointers.
  • Corwin Holland II added 18 points and 11 rebounds while Jaden Fogg totaled 14 points and 11 boards for double-doubles.
