(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson women's basketball team took on preseason favorite St. Mary's in United East action on Tuesday evening. The Seahawks showed why they were worthy of such billing as they used a suffocating defense which gave the Phoenix problems for most of the night.
Jewels Torres (Sr., York, Pa. / West York) did provide a bright spot for the Blue and White as she scored 21 points to match her season-high.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 50, St. Mary's 109
Venue: Gannett Field House
Records: Wilson 7-8, 2-3 United East; St. Mary's 11-5, 5-0 United East
How It Happened
- St. Mary's full court press was on display early forcing multiple turnovers en route to a 6-0 lead to start the game. A Chelcie Forrester (Sr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg / WVU Potomac State) layup and a pair of Torres free throws generated some momentum, but it was short-lived as the Seahawks blossomed their lead to double digits on an Olivia Liszt layup to make it 14-4. SCSM kept building to its advantage and led 24-8 after the first.
- Lae Black (Sr., Laurel, Md. / Bluefield State) and Torres both scored a pair of free throws after the Seahawks opened up the second with a 3-pointer, but the visitors kept inundating the Phoenix defensively while pulling away. SCSM led 46-21 at the break and kept adding to their lead the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
- Torres finished with 21 points after going 4-for-7 from the field. She hit her only 3-point attempt and excelled at getting to the free throw line where she was 12-for-16.
- Defensively Torres shined as well with five rebounds and two steals. Chloe Irving (So., Martinsburg, W.Va. / Martinsburg) equaled her in both categories.
