(LANGHORNE, Pa.) – The Wilson women's basketball team completed the season sweep of Cairn with a 10-point victory on the road Thursday evening. This time it counted in the league standings after the Phoenix defeated the Highlanders in Chambersburg in a non-conference affair.
Leah Laubach (So., Marietta, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) and
Chelcie Forrester (Sr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) led the charge with both recording double-doubles while
Lae Black (Sr., Laurel, Md. / Meade / Bluefield State) was a basket shy of joining them.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 73, Cairn 63
Venue: Mason Activity Center
Records: Wilson 8-8, 2-3 United East; Cairn 1-12, 0-5 United East
How It Happened
- It was a back-and-forth contest through most of the first half with seven lead changes and five ties. Wilson started off the second quarter with a small 6-0 run only to see Cairn respond with a pair of Kailee Sobrino 3-pointers to go up 20-17. The Phoenix weren't deterred, however, and quickly responded with the next six points to go back in front. This time the Blue and White stayed in front for good as that fed its way into a 14-7 run to close the half and carried a 31-27 lead into the locker room at the break.
- The Phoenix came out of the gate blazing as Black and Laubach each hit 3-pointers in the opening moments to push the lead to 39-31. Laubach's triple sparked an 8-0 run which included an old-fashioned 3-point play after she was fouled on a layup. A steal by Black then led to a fastbreak layup by Jewels Torres (Sr., York, Pa. / West York) to push the lead to a baker's dozen, the largest of the game for Wilson.
- Wilson led by double-figures for most of the remaining time, but the Highlanders did make a push midway through the fourth. After a pair of Black free throws made it 59-47 with 8:28 remaining, Cairn scored nine of the next 12 to make it a six-point game just over the midway point of the quarter. Torres helped correct course with a pair of free throws. Laubach followed with a steal led to a fastbreak layup that put the Phoenix back up 10 and they maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
- Laubach's 23 points matched her career-high which she set last against Penn State Abington. She was efficient in doing so as she went 6-for-10 overall from the field with a 3-pointer. Laubach also reached double-figures alone from the charity stripe where she made 10-of-14.
- Defensively Laubach posed problems for the Highlanders as she pulled down 10 boards and led the team with four steals.
- Forrester also added 10 rebounds and secured a double-double with 15 points after she made 6-for-9 from the field.
- Torres finished with a dozen points and dished out five assists while Black pulled in 10 caroms to round out the stat leaders for the Blue and White.
- The Highlanders' Sobrino proved difficult to stop as she scored 30 points. She scored five 3-pointers, pulled in eight rebounds, tallied seven assists, and made five steals.
For The Record
- Wilson now leads the all-time series with Cairn 13-9. The Phoenix have prevailed in the last four contests and 11 of the last 13.
