(ASTON, Pa.) – A pair of late goals was the difference maker in the women's soccer contest between Wilson and Neumann on Monday afternoon. The Phoenix and Knights looked destined for a scoreless draw until the hosts broke through with a goal in the 77th minute.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 0, Neumann 2
Venue: Neumann Turf Stadium
Records: Wilson 1-1-1, Neumann 1-3-1
How It Happened
- The Phoenix defense was tested from the get-go as Neumann pelted seven shots in the opening 8:07 and added another in the 14th minute. Just two of them were on target, however, and Madison Ebersole (So., Big Pool, Md. / Clear Springs) was able to pick up the save with one each at the lower corners.
- Wilson started to generate some offense midway through the first and got its first shot of the day from Marie Crynen (FY, Kampenhout, Belgium) with the Knights' Shannon Duffy making the save. Halley Shaffer (Sr., Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) had a good look as well just five minute later with Duffy required for the stop once more. Zoie Echols (So., Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) followed up with a shot in the 38th minute that was also saved.
- The start of the second half saw back and forth action. After an early errant shot by Neumann's Ebony Arvelo, Shaffer countered with a chance in the 50th that was saved. Less than a minute later Arvelo had another chance with Ebersole providing the stop.
- Teams exchanged a pair of opportunities before the Knights start to generate momentum with six unanswered shots. The hosts eventually broke through on a corner kick in the 77th minute as Anna Poehlmann converted on assists from Liz Purcell and Kyleigh Joniec. Two minutes later Neumann added an insurance goal as Dylan Brown found the back of the net.
Inside The Numbers
- Neumann controlled the shot chart by a 31-7 margin overall and 11- 4 in shots on goal. Shaffer had most of the chances for the Blue and White with five takes, two of which were on target.
- Despite the result, Ebersole had a solid day between the pipes with nine saves giving her two consecutive games with at least nine stops.
