Balanced Attack Leads Phoenix Past Mont Alto

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson women's soccer team showcased its depth in a victory over Penn State Mont Alto with five different players finding the back of the net on Wednesday afternoon. Little went wrong for the Phoenix as they scored three goals in an eight-minute span in the first half en route to the triumph.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 5, Penn State Mont Alto 0

Venue: Kris's Meadow

Records: Wilson 2-1-1, Penn State Mont Alto 3-1-0

How It Happened
  • The Phoenix wasted little time by putting the offensive pressure on their in-county neighbors with six shots in the first seven minutes. The Nittany Lions were able to counter and get one of their two shots in the game and the only one on goal as Bella Scarlato (FY, Severn, Md. / Glen Burnie) made the save.
  • The flood gates started to open as Halley Shaffer (Sr., Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) scored her fourth goal of the season on an assist from Marie Crynen (FY, Kampenhout, Belgium) in the 29th minute. Five minutes later, the Phoenix broke through again as Breanna Oliviero (FY, Wernersville, Pa. / Conrad Weiser) sent a pass up the middle that met with Atiya Jackson (Jr., Brunswick, Md. / Shippensburg Univ.) who scored her first of the season. Jackson wasn't finished as just 1:53 later she connected with Brynn Spangenberger (So., Chester Springs,  Pa. / Owen J. Roberts) for her first goal of the year.
  • The score remained there through the half, but picked up quickly after the break as the Phoenix pounded out three quick shots 90 seconds into the frame. Zoie Echols (So., Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) started the domino effect with a saved shot. Annie Smith (Jr., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) followed with a second, but the ricochet bounced back to Gretchen Turner (Sr., York, Pa. / Northeastern) and the third time was the charm that made it 4-0. Cadence McMahon (So., Lincoln, Del. / Cape Henlopen) put the finishing touches on the scoring with a goal in the 63rd minute.
Inside The Numbers
  • Shaffer's score was her fourth in as many games. She also led the team with six of its 31 shots.
  • Jackson's goal and helper were the first of her collegiate career, as was McMahon's and Spangenberger's goals.
  • Turner's goal was the first of the season and first since September 28, 2022 against Valley Forge.
  • Wilson outshot Mont Alto 31-2 overall and 20-1 in shots on goal.
  • Scarlato picked up her first career clean sheet.
  • Corner kicks favored the Phoenix by an 8-1 margin.
