(MONT ALTO, Pa.) – A dominate and balanced offensive effort led Wilson to its first win with a shutout of Penn State Mont Alto on an overcast Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix first lit up the scoreboard in the eighth minute and eventually pulled away from the Nittany Lions with a trio of goals in the second half.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 4, Penn State Mont Alto 0
Venue: Penn State Mont Alto Soccer Field
Records: Wilson 1-3, Penn State Mont Alto 0-3
How It Happened
- It didn't take long for the Phoenix to put on the pressure as they fired off three shots in the opening moments of the game. It eventually paid off as Lenin Cinco (Jr., Chantilly, Va. / Westfield) found Eric Arbogast (Jr., Duncansville, Pa. / Hollidaysburg) on a long pass to the right side of the box and Arbogast was able to cross up the Mont Alto keeper to the lower left 90.
- Wilson didn't let up and kept peppering the cage with six shots over the next 10 minutes. Mont Alto was able to counter for its first shot in the 17th minute, but the attempt went wide right. Offensive momentum was dormant until the final eight minutes of the frame where Brian Mulholland (Sr., Oracle, Ariz. / Canyon del Oro), Arbogast, Cinco, Omar Cortez (So., Columbia, Tenn. / Spring Hill), Landon Howe (Jr., Martinsburg, W.Va. / St. Maria Goretti), and Jackson Bennett (Jr., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) all had excellent chances, but all of the shots were saved with the exception of Mulholland who's take was high.
- While the Phoenix offense kept the pedal to the metal in the second half, it didn't show up on the scoreboard until the 72nd minute when the Nittany Lions were called for a hand ball in the box as Wilson crashed the net. Andrew Bailey (Jr., Mount Airy, Md. / Linganore) was tabbed for the penalty kick and easily converted for the score.
- Bailey wasn't done as he added another insurance goal just five minutes later after a foul gave the Phoenix a free kick deep in Mont Alto's end. Plamp sent in the ball on the restart and Bailey was able to head it inside the near post. Jace Williams (Jr., Chesapeake, Va. / Hickory) added the final score after taking a pass from Jordan DeVincent (Jr., Eldersburg, Md. / LIberty) up the middle in the 86th minute.
Inside The Numbers
- Wilson controlled the shot chart by an overall count of 34-3 with 21 on goal for the Phoenix compared to none for the Nittany Lions.
- The offensive dominance also showed up with 12 corner kicks for those in Wilson blue. Mont Alto was limited to one.
- Bailey's two goals were the first of the season and the second time he's scored multiple goals in his career. The previous time was in last year's United East Championship playoffs where he helped the Phoenix defeat Saint Elizabeth for their first postseason win in program history with an overtime goal.
- Arbogast's goal was the second of his career. His previous goal? Last year during a 4-0 win against Mont Alto at Kris's Meadow.
- Williams' goal was the second of the season.
- Gerson Navarro (Jr., Manassas Park, Va. / Manassas Park) went the distance and recorded his second career shutout. The other came against Penn State Altoona last season.
