Women's Volleyball Downed By Gallaudet, Hollins

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Another tri-match was hosted by the Wilson women's volleyball team as it welcomed Gallaudet and Hollins to the field house on Saturday. The Phoenix opened up with Bison to start league play before taking on Hollins in non-conference action in the nightcap. Unfortunately, the Blue and White dropped both contests on the day.

The Basics

Scores: Match 1 – Wilson 0, Gallaudet 3 (25-6, 25-12, 25-16)
Match 2 – Wilson 0, Hollins 3 (25-22, 25-23, 25-19)

How It Happened (Match 1 vs. Gallaudet)
  • The Bison showed why they are the defending conference champions from the start as they opened up a 4-0 lead built upon that to take the first set easily. Wilson faired somewhat better in the second frame and held a 4-3 lead after a Masalyna Miller (FY, Greencastle, Pa. / Greencastle-Antrim) ace and a 5-4 advantage on an Allyson Garcelon (Sr., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) kill shortly after. The Bison were just too strong though and quickly regained control to take a 2-0 lead. Michaela Windisch (Jr., Westminster, Md. / Catoctin) led off the third with a pair of aces, but otherwise Gallaudet kept momentum to complete the sweep.
How It Happened (Match 2 vs. Hollins)
  • The Blue and White faired better in the nightcap and took Hollins to the brink in each set. Teams were even through the first 20 points as Addie Hebert (Jr., Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg) scored an ace before Hollins jumped ahead with a 4-0 run to make it 14-10. The Phoenix kept it close as a kill from Garcelon made it 19-16 and a Garcelon ace later made it 21-19. That was the closest Wilson could get though as Hollins took the set.
  • Another close battle followed in the second. Although Hollins held a 16-10 lead, Wilson came back to get within two once again. After a pair of Hollins errors, Abby Moreland (Jr., Sabillasville, Md. / Catoctin) served an ace to make it 22-20. The visitors scored the next two to serve for game point before Wilson answered with the next three thanks to kills from Miller and Alison Daniels (So., Lititz, Pa. / Warcik). Hollins was able to score the next point, however, to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Hollins had its best start with the first five points in the third. Its lead jumped to 10-2 before Wilson answered with a Daniels kill, a Miller Moreland block, and a Daniels ace in the process of a 5-0 run. A comeback was not in the works though as Hollins went on to take the victory.
Inside The Numbers
  • Daniels led the team with 12 kills on the day. Eight came in the nightcap against Hollins.
  • Hebert paced the team on the receiving end with 15 digs.
  • Moreland had one of her better matches up front with three blocks against Hollins. She added 12 digs between both contests.
