(HARRISONBURG, Va.) – A third quarter offensive explosion helped Wilson break out in a big way as it defeated Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday afternoon. Despite a scoreless first half after putting the pressure on the Royals defense, the Phoenix attack took it to overdrive with 16 shots in the third quarter leading to four goals.
It resulted in Wilson's first win since the season opener and gave the Blue and White their largest offensive output of the year.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 5, Eastern Mennonite 0
Venue: EMU Turf Field
Records: Wilson 2-5, Eastern Mennonite 0-7
How It Happened
- The Phoenix controlled the tempo in the first half with eight shots, two of which were on goal, but the game remained scoreless at the break. Eight more shots were had to start the third quarter before Mikayla Petersen (FY, Glen Burnie, Md. / North County) finally broke through with a goal. From there the flood gates opened as Lizzie Landon (Sr., West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove) followed with a goal just 1:27 later. She wasn't done as it took just 54 seconds to hit paydirt again for a 3-0 lead.
- Finley Vandevander (So., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) got into the mix and made it 4-0 after she found the back of the cage with 2:32 left in the frame. Wilson kept the pressure on with four more shots, three of which required saves, before the period ended.
- The fourth quarter saw more of the same as the Phoenix kept peppering the Royals' goal. Kate Seymour (Jr., Churchton, Md. / Southern) led the charge and eventually scored on her third attempt in the quarter to make it 5-0. EMU was able to generate a little momentum late in the game and took two shots – the Royals only attempts of the game – but the Phoenix back line didn't allow either to be on goal.
Inside The Numbers
- The tallies by Landon and Seymour give them both five goals for the season to lead the team.
- Both Petersen and Vandevander scored not only the first goals of the season, but the first of their careers as well.
- The Phoenix outshot the Royals 30-2. The 30 shots are the most in a game this season for Wilson.
- Corners were also heavily in favor of the Phoenix by a 10-2 count. Wilson was awarded four in both the first and third quarters. Both of Eastern Mennonite's chances were given in the fourth.
- With the win, the Phoenix now lead the all-time series with their fellow Blue and White I-81 rivals 5-1. The Phoenix have scored at least three goals in all five wins.
