Field Hockey Falls To Virginia Wesleyan

(VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.) -  The Wilson field hockey team ran into a vaunted Virginia Wesleyan squad for a non-conference showdown on Saturday. The Marlins proved to be too much for the Phoenix as they scored in each quarter en route to the victory.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 0, Virginia Wesleyan 5

Venue: Birdsong Field

Records: Wilson 1-5, Virginia Wesleyan 2-4

How It Happened
  • Defenses were strong at the start with neither team able to generate a shot until the midway point of the first quarter. At that point the Marlins started to solidify their attack and were able to get off four shots before the end of the frame. Two were saved by Phoenix netminder Ashley Welker (FY, Norfolk, Va. / Maury), but Virginia Wesleyan eventually broke through with a Jasmine Padilla score just before the period ended.
  • Wilson's attack found some life in the second as Haley Hamrick (So., Taneytown, Md. / Union Bridge) and Payton Kendall (Sr., McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road) had saved shots in the 21st minute. However, Virginia Wesleyan was able to counter and add to its lead. The hosts then added another goal a couple of minutes before the end of the half. The Blue and White had a couple of chances afterwards, but Rebekah Tuckey (So., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) had a shot which required a defensive save and another opportunity where the Marlins' keeper made the stop.
  • Virginia Wesleyan kept momentum in the second half and added another pair of goals. Both came as a result from penalty corners with the first of them coming late in the third and another late in the fourth before time expired.
Inside The Numbers
  • Virginia Wesleyan led the shot chart by a 14-6 margin overall and 9-5 count in shots on goal. All five Wilson shots on goal took place in the second quarter.
  • Corners were relatively even with the Marlins holding a slight 10-9 advantage.
