Giants, Rain Halt Phoenix

(LA PLUME, Pa.) – The latest chapter of the rivalry between Wilson and Keystone saw the defending conference champions take both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix had a hot start, but saw the Giants answer and cool off Wilson en route to a Game 1 win. Game 2 saw both teams locked in a close battle, but weather reared its head and ended the contest early with Keystone up on the scoreboard.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 5, Keystone 15 (7 Innings)
Game 2 – Wilson 0, Keystone 2 (7 Innings)

Venue: Mathewson Field

Records: Wilson 6-22, 4-9 UE; Keystone 23-8, 12-1

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • The Blue and White had the bats warmed up pretty well at the start with four runs in the first inning. Jordan Daphney (Sr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside) was the first to light up the scoreboard as he doubled down the right field line with the bases loaded to score Samuel Martin (So., Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown / Hagerstown C.C.) and Ryan Torres (Sr., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley). Tony Scott (FY,  Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) followed with a base hit to left to score Harry Middlebrooks (So., Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley) and Daphney later scored after Scott was caught stealing.
  • Keystone answered with a run in the bottom of the frame and took the lead with a five-spot in the second. That lead continued to grow as the Giants posted three runs in the third and fourth. Two more followed in the sixth. Middlebrooks was able to hit in Martin in the seventh before the Giants got it back in the bottom half to end the game early.
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • A few extra base hits helped Keystone score both runs as a pair of doubles led to a run in the first and a triple followed by a sacrifice fly added another in the third. Aside from that, starter Adrian Lugo (Sr., San Juan, Puerto Rico / Manuel Cruz Maceira) was highly efficient as he struck out four and scattered five additional hits the rest of the way.
  • Wilson had multiple opportunities to answer and left multiple runners on base in five innings, but weren't able to obtain the final 90 feet. Rain eventually came down and following the conclusion of the top of the seventh, the game was called.
Up Next
Wilson will host Mount Aloysius in a single nine-inning game on Monday afternoon at 3 p.m.
